Yes, frontal boundary looks through now. With the low cloud clearing can see the lightning just out to NW. Must get my camera out!

Observed no thunder here yet.. raining persistently though. 165mm so far in Kauaeranga Valley with quite a nasty surging line of heavy rain and storms heading straight for the peninsular.

Unconfirmed Reports of a person killed by lightning while on a horse somewhere near Dargaville, there were a huge number of strikes in that area

Re: Wet and unstable, NI, Apr 13-18
Radar reveals a meso scale low in the behind the thunderstorm activity with the rear of the thunder and heavy rainfall starting to move through Auckland City now.
I see a radar instaneous rain rate in Brian's area of about 125mm/hr (but ofcourse 7.5mm in 1 min is a higher rate than that!).
We just heard from radio reports that a man riding a horse near Dargaville were both struck by lightning and killed. Happened early this afternoon.

Check out Tokoroa! The Tokoroa South station is reported 72mm in 2 hours and the North station not far behind! What flooding they must have!
That thunder and lightning sure is booming away! Not really raining though...

Re: Wet and unstable, NI, Apr 13-18
Will be interesting to see how this system affects the Coromandel/Bay of Plenty next 24hrs. Obviously already a lot of rain in the Coromandel.
Could we call the thunderstorm system over Northland/North Auckland today a MCS, mesoscale convective system.

Yes, Auckland missed most of the electrical action. Northland got hammered, just some weaker activity over Auckland. Going off in the Huaraki Gulf atm.nothing here at all, boring maybe next time
