This is rather interesting just had heavy rain for about 10mins which started off with bits of hail, however its a NE breeze .
A good 3.8mm from that stint.

There was a bit of a convergence development over head around 4:30pm which delivered 1.7mm of rain here.
You could see the NE against the southerly.
I took some photos but nothing really outstanding.
Nice Cu line developing to the south in the twilight after sunset.

Intermittant light rain in central Chch this evening, but nothing much. (only 1mm at Hillmorton station)

Last nights Invercargill sounding was just about as a cold a sounding as you will ever see in this country. With thickness values of 5220 it doesn't get too much colder than that! Edit, just for interest I looked back at the big chill of 5 July 2003 and the thickness values there were down to 5170 at Invercargill. Thats a good step colder.

It sure is bitterly cold more like something you would feel about mid winter not april brrrrrrrrr.
Looks like we had a heavy hail shower in the early hours still abit of ice lying around even packed into the middle of Carex.
Watch for a clap or two of thunder if a heafty one comes through.

Looks bitter down South. An interesting spell of weather for the South to finish an interesting weather week for NZ.


Cooler dryer southerly air will clear the weather up here this afternoon, perhaps some high cloud drifting down from the north will save us from our first cold night.?

Hi from Thornbury Southland . Have just got back on the air after losing the internet connection during a severe thunderstorm in the community yesterday morning started at about 0500.. Also had an inch of hail in the ground from the storm and 35 mm in the raingauge after it was over .Power surges yesterday am and lost power for half an hour last night

I could see fresh snow on the North Canterbury mountains from Chch (top of carpark building), but couldn't see how low. Partially cleared in the city after showers earlier in the morning.

Michael, the winter of 1978 was quite mild, the warmest since the exceptional one of 1971 and 21st warmest of the 150-odd assessed up to 2003. However it was wet in many areas as was the period April-September in some parts.

Perhaps he was thinking of 1977, when 1st half of autumn was warm in NZ, but wintry conditions set in 2nd half of April and persisted through May. Winter was wet but with normal temperatures I think, though a very cold September 1977 meant that the winter was one long one.

Cold southerlies must've arrived in the North Island, with both Waiouru and Takapau Plains down to 6C at 3pm - the latter being at only about 200-300m asl I think.
Sunny in Chch but with a cold gusty southerly, and shower cloud still passing over BP.

southerly arrived here around 1.30-2pm. it was almost 20C at the time but it is now 9C

Here in Amberley we had a long shower of hail around 5am, then rain till around 6.30. Hail always sounds heavier at night, so I wont hazard a guess, but it did seem rather loud. There was white on top of the Teviots this morning, but I think that was probably hail rather than snow. Snow was low on most of the western hills, down to around 2-300m I would say, but very light and melting quickly by mid morning. I turned up in Oxford just after 9am and there was some very light snow (not hail, I checked) in the shady patches, and snow on the hills looked to be down almost to town level.

That would of been our hail shower we had at 4am. So it took an hour to move from here to Amberley?
We had the thunder but obviously you didn't. Hail size was about the size of this - O, well slightly bigger, not like the usual pinn head size you get with hail in wintry showers.
