Tich, Ryan that thunder you heard to the west at that time was actually right over me, it's the closest bolt ive ever seen just about shat myself  was about a 2 second count before some incrediably loud thunder.
It was an IC bolt right across the sky, unfortunatly because again the lightning was not frequent enough i didnt have my camera out, but it came out after that for a few more booms of thunder.
Not much in the way of precipitation here though just 1.2mm of light rain with a hint of sleet droplets, and a strong to near gale force southerly.
I can now see more CU to the SW under the blue sky, boy oh boy that was close if only :D i guess its like catching fish the big one gets away.
Got some good pics will post later, according to MS another trough is expected to sweep through overnight with a low risk of TS.
Cheers
Jason.

Hail shower just came through and lasted for about 10 minutes. Grass and roads are all white.

Brief front passed through Amberley just 20 min ago. Accompanied by sizeable hail, thunder and lightening. Mt Grey now sprinkled with probably a mix of snow and hail to the half way mark. Clear towards the south again but cloud forming quickly - temperature now 2ºC. Interesting day!

very interesting day folks!! turned out beauttiiiful this morning but around 11am you could see the cu building away and around bout 12 20pm i was at work and could see this monster of CU going up, fantastic instability!!
and to my mind there was no NW today or up high either so it appeared it was always going to come straight at us!
Loven the first pic of your photos andrew, like Steve said.. it brings out the base well and it was what i saw while on a roof cleaning out someones gutter

Amen to today!!

I wouldnt say that too quickly looks like the icy showers are coming back, with a few beefy looking showers coming in.
Just caught the edge of what looked like a hail shower with a few spots of rain, tonight could be interesting :-k maybe a few flakes ;) .

a clown celebrating snowfall at the remarkables.

Sitting on 4.8 deg here in north Dunedin with frequent bursts of hail and heavy rain. May head up Mt Cargill later on or in the morning, few cms had settled up there by mid afternoon apparently, would expect a decent bit more by now.

Hailing in central Chch - down to 3.7C at Hillmorton, so sleet possible too and could be snow on Port Hills.
