Snow in Canterbury to 400m (MetService) or 600m (Blue Skies) - I'd say even lower than 400m as it's wet and 3.6C now.

I would say its below 200m at the moment because ive got rather large sleet droplets here mixed in with rain and its 3C.
Could see the sleet well in the second half of the rugby.
Cheers

Stars out, 4ºC, brisk wind from the south, laced with the odd spot of rain. More on the way I would think if the rain radar is anything to go by.

Snow in Chch in May is pretty rare - a few flakes in some suburbs in 2006, before that it was 1988 I believe. 2006 and 1988 were mid May; early May would be even rarer.

I do recall a few years ago maybe 2006 tich, a brief fall of snow for only about 20mins down to sea level in mid April.
I think it was from a low crossing into south canterbury combining a northerly front with a southerly.

And the rain has just arrived again with strong southerlies driving it sideways. Hitting the windows hard but no hail. Predict we will be eating breakfast tomorrow with views of a white Mt Grey... Tich, my diary says there was snow on Mt Grey May 15th of last year, I wonder whether Sugar Loaf or Mt Herbert got any then.

Hail, sleet and rain from early evening, more frequent as time went on, though not much here now. Temps still slowly decreasing, now at 3.7.

Also quite early in the evening Mt Herbet (?) was completely covered from my view, somewhere in Yaldhurst.

Yes there was snow on Port Hills last night - heavy enough to block Dyers Pass Rd for a while. (according to today's Press) Reports this morning of snow on Rimutaka Hill Rd as well.

But of course, as you are inland and sheltered by lots of ranges

Its been coming down persistant to heavy since 1am only briefly stopping and definatly not showers either.
Just had a nice period then of heavy rain mixed with large defined sleet droplets, snow level has to be below 400m surly.
Havnt checked rain gauge but i would say a good 25-30mm since 10pm last night.
Cheers

Squalls coming through here, sun out briefly then driving cold rain follows and low visibility for a time. Glimpses of blue sky to the east out to sea. Snow on Mt Grey and sprinkling on Mt Cass - although the latter has had no more since yesterday. 24 mm rain since 3pm yesterday. Currently 4ºC and fire is lit!
