A nice line of Storms has developed east of Northland and is sliding SE, should be able to see lightning in Aucklands eastern sky when it gets dark.

No, I wasn't a weather fanatic when I was 7!Michael wrote:Like a repeat of Tuesday night here last night! After 56mm on Tue, we had 55mm yesterday! (ending midnight). I bet that doesn't happen in Auckland very often!
Cant you remember 1998 was like that.

Saw a couple of flashes out towards Henderson way. Am trying to watch for some more, but my little 2 year old boy is terrified.

Re: Unstable low upper north Sunday/Monday
Looks like a low moved down to lie in the vicnity or northeast of Auckland, and I see the radar shows the rain band to have kept moving to the southeast with no significant wrap around on its western side. It was looking good for a while there! Oh well, we did get quite a good show of thunderstorms (mainly over northern Northland, out to the east of Auckland and down into the Bay of Plenty.
Vertigo; one idea that comes to mind are Landsat images (very detailed but only a couple of times a day being polar orbital - check out the Landcare (I think it is) site). You will have to search the Internet. Polar obiter images give highly detailed images. Come to think of it, I have a couple of links at work that may be of use. Will dig them out tomorrow for you.

That line has fired up nicely up the Western side of the Coromandel by the look of it

Yes it is massive. Thank goodness its going away for now! Some cloud top temps out there are -68C or so.
Vertigo, here is a link that might be useful
http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/realtime/2006047/
This is to the MODIS Rapid Response System. It gives you near real time images from two polar orbiter satellites called 'Terra' and 'Aqua' These orbit in opposite directions I think. Its a bit tricky to use - the tricky part interpreting when you get an image for the area you are interested in. But the images are very detailed.
