I wonder if they can retrive the radar images from yesterday and last night. I would love to see it. I have only once before seen rain that heavy for such a sustaind period of time. The other time was in spring 2005 i think, when i was working in the rain and we recorded 60mm in 60mins.

Very useful rainfall figures reported folks.

Looks like there may be some more action over the north again today, especially eastern Northland (we'll need to watch Whangarei) and northern Coromandel Peninsula.

Looks like the drought might be over in Waikato. Ruapehu should've got alot more snow from this system than the earlier southerly - since the moisture is coming from the north, this time, there should be more snow in the more northerly parts of the central high country that would be sheltered from southerlies.

Weak cb's popping up west of here over Waitakeri ranges atm.

I'm certain we got a lot more rain here last night than Rickys site was showing.

I have to agree with you. It was just torrential. I would have thought about 35-40mm in the hour of rain. Maby even more. Water was running off a small park next door to me and running through someones garden. This morning there was bark and dirt all over the road and a one very sad looking garden.

I can see some good looking anvil clouds around the place atm. One way down south over the bombays. I was just talking to dad and he said its as black as night there (between taupiri and horshamdowns) atm and about to bucket down. I wonder if the anvil down south is what hes getting now :-k

the rain last night was heavy drops, sounded very heavy on the roof, but it was not as dense as it it could have been
big drops tend to slash and run instead of get soaked up I guess
just my thoughts

The shower we had here last night was about as heavy as rain could get. :)

Very unstable sounding from Whenuapai at noon. CAPE = 1556. Lifted Index is -5.4!

Everything seems to be ontrack.

the rain was pulsing here on the roof alot...was weird in fact...great sign of how unstable it was...and so some people could easily get alot more rain than other people the way the whole thing was I would say :)

paul, how hard would it be to get higher resolution visible images of the various weather events we recieve in this country? i know i would be extremely interested in viewing the the cloud formations from the top.

we need someone crazy enough to fly in these conditions to take photos for us :)

Do you mean other than satellite imagery?
(You can look at visible and IR images on the MetService web site (& others) under 'Maps and Observations').

yes, satellite imagery. the pics on the MS site are nice, and i use them constantly, but find them a bit lacking in resolution.

We just need the lift today. There is a front moving onto upper Northland now which is pushing up some good cb's. Will it reach Auckland? Too far north by the looks.

Can see very good cb tops to far North. Just weaker clouds around Auckland.

were just getting to the hottest part of the day now, so lets just see if the daytime heating is enough. luckily we have almost clear skies at the moment to promote development!

who knows - this forecasting stuff is always black magic.

edit: temp up to 18C now, up 2C.

looks like the CB lines up north are going to roll over just to the north of Auckland
i.e this looks bang on so far:
http://www.metservice.co.nz/default/ind ... stormwatch

also, strangely, the wind has been going more around to the west instead of more around to the east, around the auckland area...you would think it would go more around to the east as the low to the north go closer...

No rain since dawn here today, many cumulonimbus visible! Probably will miss the action here, but after 132mm in a week people will be screaming for it stop! Firefighters were called out across Auckland and out this way again last night...

FROM NZHERALD:

Torrential rain last night caused wide-spread flooding to parts of Auckland before the downpours moved south-east to the Bay of Plenty.

However, the miserable wet weather that forced most North Islanders indoors should be gone today, with the heavy rain easing to showers throughout the week.

Fire shift manager Jaron Phillips said there were over 80 call-outs in Auckland last night with basements and garages getting flooded.

He said fire fighters pumped out flooded basements and garages and secured tarpaulins over roofs that had lost tiles.

Mr Phillips said the calls started coming in from Clover Park in Manukau where residents reported a tornado.

"But it sounds more like high-winds that caused tiles to come off roofs," Mr Phillips said.

He said the rain related calls started on the North Shore in the bays and Milford.

"And then it moved into the city - Eden Terrace, Freemans Bay, Mt Eden and Epsom," Mr Phillips said.

He said the rain then moved east flooding basements and causing surface flooding on the roads of Howick.

Mr Phillips said at 1.30am the calls were still coming in from Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty.
