As the present gang of lows rotate slowly away to east of the North Island a period of warmer calmer weather begins, featuring warmer days, long fine periods across the country, outbreaks of warm nor-westerly winds about the east coasts of both islands, and very little snow.

Looks like the scenario maybe for a week, but a massive polar trough then appears on the southwestern horizon. Long way off though.

I can see conditions like that lasting maybe a couple of days? Looks to me like this May is going to carry on in a fairly unsettled fashion. Heavy snow up high in the south over the next few days, lower levels but lighter on sunday.

I don't mind what May brings provided it is reasonably dry here. The downpours at the end of April were most unwelcome.

Probably mean yes for all the country except up here where it just remains Wet and Windy with the usual 8Â° to 16Â° range.

cold morning in the waikato by the looks...and only 1.5oC in Waiuku this morning (Waiuku is in a bit of a hollow)
that wont help with the grass growth recovery after such a long dry hot summer

this high does look to hang around a bit longer?

Yeah,good spotting there tich,

been looking at that one, looks quite scary on the models.

Think we'll need a new thread for it when it gets closer. Bit early yet but it looks and moves in a kinda different way.

Itâ€™s certainly got potential if it pans out close to the models.

Looking to hit about 20th -22nd May.

this high is a nice change. Nice chrisp mornings and clear blue skies. Good thing is that it does look to be sticking around for a while.

Just seen this http://wxmaps.org/pix/aus.144hr.html .. I havnt seen things to this extremity before. Im no weather map expert so could someone please tell me what is going on ontop of victoria. to me it looks like a nice upper level low pressure system with strong lift figures and the freezing level is visible in patches on their mountains. It might not be anything special. i just had not seen something like this before and am just really after an explanation of what it means.

Doesn't this seem a bit odd to anyone? The differences in different areas? Compared to local areas?.. Such as Christchurch being cold .. And pretty much the rest of the south island is far warmer. Kind the same with some of the north island areas too.. Anyone care to explain?

i would say there is some gremlins at the midnight readings Ryan Thomas (i.e dont go by the midnight readings)

The fog here this morning is the thickest I have seen it for some time. Currently 6.4C, after a low of 4.9C. Gentle SW breeze has developed already, maybe the fog won't last for long.

Yup thats exactly what I was thinking, something suspicious about Metservice readings since it was the second night in a row, still funny cause it was a bit to extreme

edit: -20 at manapouri! at the 6am reading Definitely must be something wrong down there with the readings
