Define "nice" - totally subjective in the case of "weather", as with so many things. For me it's simple: mild, dry and sunny, or as many of those as can be managed under the circumstances.

I'll take that also.

Most primary school teachers would have had drilled the adjective "nice" out of the heads of their pupils. Perhaps a nice refresher course is needed for some.

I guess in Canterbury W or SW winds are plesant and then the changes can bring them stormy weather should the flow go S enough being with a typical SW being a NE there. but not here.Dont care if its cold or hot but windless and dry are more important.

Avoiding "nice" [based on a fallacious understanding of the word's original meaning] was one of the many rules/obsessions my primary school teachers (a long time ago!) tried to impose. They also didn't like "got". In the main they were a bunch of sanctimonious, humourless, boring, self-important prigs, but in a postwar (roughly) slump in available talent, that was not too surprising.

Yes, I know - getting off-topic. My preference for June would be mainly anticyclonic westerly with unusually warm rain feeding into the catchment lakes and mild sunny conditions in the east.

Little OT i remember June 1982 in Wellington,for a whole month it only was unsettled on about 5 days in that month and was there a week in 84 and was lovely the whole week.

3C at the Airport. Surprising that the airport got that low I think. Got down to 1.8C here and about 1.3C at Botany according to the station there. Our car was frosted over solidly this morning, and the neighbours tile roof had a few white frost patches forming on it at dawn. Waiuku reported -0.1C which is possible but I don't know about the other zeros you are talking about?

Owairaka's record is -2.5C (Owairaka is an official meteorological site). As discussed on the forum before, overnight temps in Auckland vary a lot. The last 4 years coldest temps here are: -1.3C in 2004, -0.7C in 2005, -0.9C in 2006 and -1.0C in 2007. Other parts would very rarely dip down to 0C.

Maybe because as you said, no frost where you are - 17 May 2006 had a low of 1.1C here which is colder than than 1.8C last Thursday. Definately a cooler May with an average low of 7.6C for the month here (last Winter av. low was 7.4C).

It only takes a temperature of about 3C for our car to start freezing, about 1-2C for parts of the roof and about 0C for the deck and lawn. -1C means white roofs and crispy white frost on open areas of the lawn.

Strangely enough, over Stockade Hill a couple of kms away there doesn't seem to be much frost at all, even in Winter.

check out the cloud formation above the now land based Mangere sewarge works (middle of photo)
unstable conditions, did not need much of a ommph to get the cloud to tower....pitty it was not with October or November sunshine today!

Had an amazing cloud comming off Huntly power station today with these conditions. It was a big Cu that was rising from the heat off the station and was visible from in hamilton. It was there all day and just looked really neat.. pitty i didnt have a camera

13C dewpoints today so some fairly moist air for the time of year hence the early morning Fog and the towering Cu through the day.
