Unstable trough in the north

Unread post by NZstorm »

There is a bit of a trough lurking over northern NZ so will start a thread on this. Looks like a front within this trough is progged to be over North Auckland tomorrow. Cold upper air over warm seas is leading to some convection so isolated thunderstorms near coastal parts of Northland particularly in the far north where the upper air will be colder tomorrow and surface airmass a bit more moist. The whole thing shifts away Tuesday with perhaps another low coming in late week (according to the flip floppy GFS).

See what fires up.
Can see towering Cu and Cb cloud out to sea to the NW and the Sat pic shows more development to the NE of Northland.

Fine with some high cloud, calm, 16C, dewpoint 9C.

Check out the updated version of the severe weather outlook, there is now a moderate confidence of warning amounts of rain in the majority of the Auckland area, from about the southern suburbs northwards. I look forward to see how things turn out. :)

The Front has been weak over the cool land but active and thundery over the warm sea. I see Cooks Beach has had 52mm overnight.
7mm for central Ak and the temp is just 10C which is cold for Auckland.

I see the rain moving across us is becoming heavier, we had 12mm since midnight here, mostly light rain, becoming moderate now. Only 9.4C so cold rain! Looks to be a fair bit more to come today as that area of rain is drifting eastwards slowly. :)

Never got colder in the night here though than it is now,A NW or W preferably strong would be a welcome change for a few days but highly unlikely looking at the map, would clear some of the mess away especially the roof.
