It's still a degree here, so anything else that falls here will be snow.
I'm just waiting for the next radar, I wish it covered Dunedin a bit better.

Re: Polar Outbreak starting 07/06/2008
Stopped here as well, I measured 5cm over open ground, 8cm in sheltered areas. We have lost a number of limbs off old pine and macrocarpa trees, and our shadehouse is in tatters with the posts fallen over and the cloth ripped in places. This will prove to be an expensive event.
@Gopolks, could you please stop the multiple postings just a few minutes apart. This thread contains a far higher percentage of posts from you than is needed. There are a few others of you who need to heed the same warning.

Re: Polar Outbreak starting 07/06/2008
isnt the cold air meant to swing more S or SW or whatever tonight and that create even colder air and more snow?

Memorial Ave got a bit from what you can see on the webcam. And even colder? Wonder how much moisture will be in that air

Re: Polar Outbreak starting 07/06/2008
Yes, some cb showers will come up the coast this evening possibly affecting CH toward midnight. But I think BP is better placed to catch these.isnt the cold air meant to swing more S or SW or whatever tonight and that create even colder air and more snow?
Edit Actually the CH radar suggests the front is not finished with CH yet.

We have had some heavy showers of sleet and hail in Thornbury late this afternoon .Currently 3.0 degrees ,Cb tops to west .Drove to Tuatapere via inland route snowed ,sleeted and hailed most of the way. Very heavy hail shower at Tuatapere around 4pm . Road covered ,could drive only at 30kph for three kilometers along SH 99 heading south .Actual snow level about 300 meters. May drop tonight

Re: Polar Outbreak starting 07/06/2008
I'm interested (even while the event is ongoing) in a meteorological insight into what has happened today...in some places around CHCH we saw temps up to 17C before, well, bottoming out to almost 0C...that's QUITE a drop, anywhere in the world...obviously we had a strong front pass through and I thought we wouldn't really see snow to sea level until late in the day (after sunset)....but, oh well, c'est la vie...sure, we can guess all we want regarding numbers and all, but Mother Nature ALWAYS has a way of putting her twist on things...
I guess I am after a "lessons learned," if you will...

Re: Polar Outbreak starting 07/06/2008
Snow level around the Dunedin area has been around 300m today however it got much lower late afternoon for locations in the path of some quite large Cb clouds that moved through.
