Abit of rain here now with a few flakes thrown in, looks like it may snow again soon chch last few radars indicate more moisture developing from Templeton-Ashburton and inland.
Up to 2cm here in most places deepest i got was 2.5cm, most concrete surfaces have melted the snow away now because the surface is so warm but not other surfaces.
Fire siren went off at about 5pm with sirens whailing south of Kaiapoi so not quite sure what that was about.
Sky didgital is down at the moment too  better be on for the rugga.
Here is some pics anywayz.

Interesting photos there, Jase :)
Raining here now, intermingled with a bit of sleet, so that will get rid of the snow overnight. Temperature now up to 0.5ºC.

Indeed, snowing again here, too...don't think it will last much longer, though...radar loops show it ending in the next hour or so...but the SW "shower train" looks nice and set up for BP...

Reports from online forums says its also been snowing heavily in North Canterbury, eg Hanmer and Culverden. Kaikoura was down to 3C at 6pm.

I would like to lodge a formal complaint within this thread.

Once again Dunedin has been left largely out of the snowfall area from a Cold Front with a lot of promise. I believe the Cantabrians are being excessively greedy in hogging nearly all the settling snow for a nearly South Island-wide weather event. [-X

But didnt Dunedin steal Canterbury's snow events last year, all through winter. So we are not even yet. Cant needs to steal more of you guys down there.

This was fab snow event for canterbury, and was not even expected snow to Tim, Ash or even CHCH. Going up on the port hills tomorrow if the roads are opens. or maybe nth cant for a drive.

The UKmet and basic GFS didn't pick todays Canterbury snowfall. But I could see these models were in trouble last night though.

Looks to still be a good crop of snow shower cloud off the Southland/ south Otago coasts so Dunedin folk shouldn't call it over yet!

Well that was a nice wee event, snow settled on the ground, big thick flakes, a good start to winter. Two nice bursts tonight, and hopefully wake up to a sunny morning with the snow on the tops of the mountains, that would make a lovely view.

The frontal system passed through Wellington/Upper Hutt around 7pm and was captured well by my station and others in the area. Our temp dropped from 13.1C at 7pm to 6.0C at 8pm (still dropping now at -1.5C per hr) The front contained a heavy 13.0mm rain event and a Southerly change. We also recorded some lightning strikes and heard some thunder as well. All in all, quite an interesting evening, and the All Blacks certainly felt the cold down at the Cake Tin! :) :) :)

anyone would think reading all these posts that you guys have never seen snow before, harden up fellas, LOL!
but I guess everyone got caught up in the excitment of it all
sounds like though it has been heavy enough to do some damage in some areas, so thats not good
the fact the barometer did not rise after the front went through suggests to me that a low developed over the canterbury area, in behind the front, in the lee of the mountains, and so you ended up with the dropping barometer cooling the airmass
