Anyone get any good pictures of the port hills in the morning? Most of the snow was melted when I had a look at 2:30pm or so.. Theres a good one on Jeffs site, wondering if theres more tho
I went up on the port hills after lunch, alot of the snow was melted as you say Ryan however had to take it easy going up there as alot of snow was still on the road side and quite abit of ice and grit around.
appeared to me to be about 3cm of snow when i went up pretty much right at top where suger loaf is and the tv tower.
This will *probably* be the last post for this thread for me, but there were some interesting reads in today's Press about the snowfall over the weekend...one of the articles was about how the M/S got a wee bit jittery as the front was passing...basically, the barometer wasn't going up at all and they were beginning to wonder if a low wasn't trying to form off the Canty coast...THAT would have given us a REAL dumping...they also mentioned what Jasestrm had mentioned on FRI night...about the moisture coming in from that Low off the east Aussie coast with all the cold air being pulled up from the South...the ingredients were there for an even bigger snow fall for the SI, they just didn't get mixed in the bowl very well...'til next time
Yes, I thought the Met Service were brave to lift the snow warnings when they did.
The moisture from this system came in from the southern oceans. To get moisture from the north you will need a weather system to come in from the north and basically be undercut by colder air from the south. This is what we call warm advective snow. It doesn't happen much but 2006 was good example of it. Because you have the energy of a warm lattitude system the snow is very heavy. Warm advective snow storms happen a lot in USA. It can happen over the central North Island too.
