Re: 2008 Ski Season
1m of snow is a lot to come in one fall by anyones standards. Especially in NZ where such snowfalls happen over relatively short periods of time, are accompanied by high winds, and we don't ski below the treeline. By the time the ski areas are able to dig themselves out, de-ice the lifts (Mt Hutt gets incredibly bad rime from the E) carry out avalanche work and clear the roads (not to mention groom main trails), a day or more can easily pass, giving the snow plenty of time to develop wind/rime crust. Incidentally, the race teams based at mt Hutt transferred down to coronet peak last night in order to continue training, as MT Hutt don't expect to be open before saturday. Should be a good spring for canterbury. Maybe Hutt will hit the 5 m base depth mark again this year? Interesting that Gary is quiet now that this seems to be one of the most consistent snow years right across the south island high country since the start of July.

It's a shame that again forced personal opinions have caused Gary to go quiet.southernthrash wrote:Interesting that Gary is quiet now that this seems to be one of the most consistent snow years right across the south island high country since the start of July.
We are all entitled to have our own opinion. If our opinion is based on our own personal experiences (such as Gary's were) then it's quite possible they will vary from anothers perception. Debate it or accept it, whilst some debate can be healthy it can also become offensive and insulting, accepting the other persons opinion and offering your own without debating the others opinion is far healthier.
Gary is a radio technician and from memory he works for a large company that provides for hydro generation etc. He is likely to have considerable experience travelling in adverse weather conditions to remote elevated sites. Subsequently he's likely to have experience of how many significant events occur and how severe they are... but maybe only when equipment fails and he has to go out in the events. That may colour his opinion, but maybe it won't.... I'm in no position to judge.
But I will emphasis that I miss seeing his participation (again). The way he was baited etc when he was offering his opinion, I'm not suprised he's no longer participating.
I honestly don't think your comment is fair or necessary.

Fair comment. You must live in a place to fully understand its own weather microclimes.

I also fully agree and this elitist attitude that some folk have just stinks and in my humble opinion is just not needed.
While we are at it - some folk around here certainly know how to make others feel right at home by totally ignoring them, unsure as to why, maybe they don't have the latest weather station or could it be in the letters lacking behind their names, god knows but to me it stands out like dogs balls from what I have been quietly viewing over the last few months.
Some folk need to get over themselves!!!

Re: 2008 Ski Season
I hope those who forced there opinion on him feel happy now! and i cant help but notice the subtle bagging the canterbury ski areas get from some people when they have far bigger bases than the areas to the south.

Re: 2008 Ski Season
Subtle bagging? I know what you are referring to... this is it, I have no doubt that the best skiing in NZ right now (well when they can open) would be in the Craigieburn range, and damn I wish I was there! Ohau will be amazing once the clouds clear too. Mt Hutt will inevitably develop a yucky wind/rime crust by the time they open, due to their proximity to the east coast, and the wet heavy snow that has fallen (at least wet heavy snow won't be windstripped as easily!), and their chairs will take a lot of work to get de - iced and up and running again. I'm not bagging them, just pointing out the unfortunate truths of being close to the coast, and recieving a lot of wet snow within a maritime climate. These dumps now will pay off come late september/october, if they break the 2.5 m mark, then they will easily be able to ski into November, pending customer interest. Most Hutt locals I know will hold off a bit once they reopen until they get some lighter drier snow on top, then it'll be magic. Till then it's punter cement! Quality, not quantity, comes to mind.

I think it is fair to say that this winter in land Otago and Inland South Canterbury has been very mild, with above average temperatures few hard frosts and below average to average snow on the mountains.
I know this and Gary will know this.
It is shame Gary is no longer here, his humour will be missed. Some people on this forum need to get of their high horse! And lighten up a little
A cold winter in these regions is one to remember!

mmmm potential there...
Hutt did well to dig themselves out and get the lifts running for those who made it up there.

I guess they did do well but they have a huge army of staff and would be highly motivated to get those dollars rolling in before the next spell of wild weather strikes.southernthrash wrote:mmmm potential there...

Re: 2008 Ski Season
Looks like the canterbury ski areas are having a bumper season this year with new snow every couple of days, another 20-25cm for mount hut and other areas.

More snow for our fields next week. Looks good for Ruapehu which currently has 260cm.
