Damit... i have been stuck inside all day since 6am so have seen nothing  ! Sounds like it has been a wild day out there. Hope we get some more 8-[ . Got 3 weeks holiday as of today. Off to sydney for 6 days, leaving very early sunday morning. Going to the 3rd state of origin game while im over there!!!!!! Then when i get back, a couple of days rest then its down to mt Ruapehu for nearly a week of snow bording :D CANT WAIT!!!!!

Cameo, was that thunder we could hear in that exam this afternoon :-k ? It sounded like thunder but was probably to often to be thunder. Not sure what the sound was really. Suprised at how few were at shads tonight... very disapointing :(

You've had a few years worth of thunderstorms over the last few days eh? I don't think Christchurch would ever have em like the north island has over last few days

Sadly they haven't made them accross to the East coast. Been a while since we have had a decent storm over here.

Bring on Sydney & Brisbane at the end of August, fingers crossed I'll see one then.

No sadly, Ryan :( we just get the boring weather like today in situations like this, more so at this time of year.
Should be windy tomorrow with that slow moving low off the east coast here.

I like windy days, its a change. We've had nice weather lately but just a tad boring. I'd rather it rained then drizzle tho.

Yes, the forecast for CHCH tomorrow is for rain developing around noon and becoming heavy with southerlies reaching gale and snow lowering to 500m with heavy falls. There is also a severe weather watch where 30cm - 50cm of snow may accummulate to 600m. Lighter falls to 400m. This is due to a deepening low which will lie east of Canterbury and Kaikoura saturday night and into sunday morning. Rain will ease to showers on Sunday but snow still to 500m for most of the day! It seems it is going to be slower moving than the last blast. However, not as polar :(. But at least the canterbury ski fields will be getting a good dumping!!! Look at Tauroa ski field atm. 131 cm atm and another 60 odd cm forecast for the next 3 days. It will be around the 2m mark soon!!!

Hey, just replying to some earlier posts about the news media not covering the incredible lightning.

YES - i TOTALLY agree!!! Have been trying desperately to get stories on it....breaking the news about the 2800 strikes this morning Newstalk ZB ran with it as the headline news story which I was very pleased about. But I can never understand why TV don't show footage....at least show the lightning radar. Very odd. Oh well, so long as radio is covering it!! (no, i'm not bias...lol)

I find that events like the Auckland lightning usually makes news if it occured on the weekend rather than during the week, especailly when there is lots of murders trials, etc.,and weekly business/political/sport/world issues whatever, are more important issues for broadcast. I believe there is some code that the media work to??
I was surprised by the cold snap coverage on the news on Tuesday when I regaded it as not a very significant event.
It's winter anyway?

yes, its a pick and choose on the spare of the moment kind of thing I think, though yeah, other things come up too, but people like to hear about things they have actually experienced and can actually relate to, and is a nice break from the misery of most of the rest of the news

The front is looking relatively weak, the isolated thunder this morning was in the west.

The squalls will ease up considerably today but we should get more hail and the odd thunder clap.

There is model agreement for another disturbed unstable system to spread onto NZ from mid next week.

yes, ground hog week ground hog week!

There does look to be one cell on the next front thats looking better and better as it approaches the auckland area...

this weeks thunderstorms which have been very active, i.e lightning every 30 seconds or so,for hours on end, is unusual
I think a key ingredient is the warmer than normal tasman sea temperatures (and a colder than normal for time of year outbreak)
we identified a few months ago that the warmer than normal tasman could lead to exactly what has happened this week :)
