That thunder clap must have been heard across much of Ak, dark skies south of here.

Re: Ground Hog Week or (Cold End To June)
I think its quite possible there could still be thunder in the Auckland vicinity after midnight tonight which would give us 6 days on the trot with thunder observed. The last time I recorded 5 consecutive thunder days was a few years back and it was in the month of May.

Re: Ground Hog Week or (Cold End To June)
This run of unstable started last Sunday with a storm in the Hauraki Gulf. Northern parts of Auckland would have the thunder from that storm so 6 of the last 7 days will have been thunderstorm days for parts of Auckland with the chance of more storms overnight.
Massive thunder clap here now and hail

Re: Ground Hog Week or (Cold End To June)
Damn! On my run in the first half I saw the dark clouds gathering and heard a distant rumble of thunder, in the last minute or so unfortunately it poured on me Fortunately only 1.3mm from it.
Strange how I keep hearing about hail? No hail here since Tuesday evening.

A heavy shower of sleet in Hams at around 11am this morning as I was refereeing a soccer match, no thunder though. Just cold and wet out there...

Re: Ground Hog Week or (Cold End To June)
A page or two back there was some comment on how unusual this thundery period has been. I don't know what people have heard or read but I heard my colleague Andy Downs interviewed this morning on National Radio and he said that the succession of troughs and unsettledness is not so unusual in winter but the amount of electrical activity was up there -these not his exact words.
I think it has been quite some time (some years) since we have seen such a succession of large scale troughs with such cold pools associated producing so much thunderstorm activity, so I would say it is somewhat/rather unusual.
Paul
(Can't remember who said it now, but its nonsense to think there is some sort of political aspect to any comments on the weather by MetService. It just doesn't happen.)

Re: Ground Hog Week or (Cold End To June)
How long has the depression been centred off the east coast of the SI? Seems to have camped there around a week or more now... has aided the SW flow up the Tasman and onto both islands. The warm Tasman Sea has added some energy into those troughs especially north of Wanganui...

Re: Ground Hog Week or (Cold End To June)
Some good hail in Titirangi about 15 minutes ago.
Lighntning on and off.
Dry at the moment with dark clouds over the Waitakeres.
Very threatening skies over Glen Eden towards Henderson.
Some action very soon by the look of it.

Who put the LED's on the lightning arrestor ?

Yes, it is unusual to get such a prolonged episode of thundery weather here.
Yet more thunder here now from another Cb moving in from the west

Re: Ground Hog Week or (Cold End To June)
Have had quite a few heavy rain and hail showers since late morning, resulting in a quick 22mm since 9am. Saw some nice looking CB cells, but they don't appear to be very lightning active down this end of the NI.

Re: Ground Hog Week or (Cold End To June)
I thought to myself I will be surprised if there's no hail when I saw the really dark clouds coming and heard some very distant thunder rumbling, but the nasty clouds went overhead, only with a brief moderate shower and a few wind gusts. Disappointing really
Maybe best still to come?

plenty of action on the western side of auckland David
they are weakening by the time they get across to you (surprising really how much this is occuring over such a narrow bit of land really)
