i see lots of towers shooting up, producing lenticular clouds above them. must be some fairly nice updrafts around.

Well that was "short & sweet" here - not much more than a heavy rain shower with a wind change - much cooler now.

Probably pileus or cap clouds - different formation process to lenticulars, although they look very similar.Vertigo wrote:i see lots of towers shooting up, producing lenticular clouds above them. must be some fairly nice updrafts around.

Brief downpour just went through here with a few hailstones about 6mm or so in diameter.

Re: Severe Weather - N/Island - 2nd/3rd July
the waitakere ranges often produce lenticular clouds downstream in NW winds

Re: Severe Weather - N/Island - Early July
Probably because they were both pretty minor, and in Auckland probably straight-line winds rather than a "real" tornado?

Of course we're interested, doesn't mean we have to comment on it.Razor wrote:Still, at least they actually happened huh>
Beautiful fine day here and 9C at the moment with light northery winds... better make the most of it - front coming tonight and some cold days on the way!

Re: Severe Weather - N/Island - Early July
Yeah - first thing I did was check out the news stories - but not really much of substance to comment on - the Auckland report happened well after the major instability from the front had passed by - given the conditions at the time, I suspect that it wasn't a tornado as such, but squally winds lifting roof tiles.Razor wrote:Still, at least they actually happened huh>

Re: Severe Weather - N/Island - Early July
there has been some photos of the damage posted on the other nz weather forum
looks like straight line winds that have come down a hill side....the roof damage is on the leeward side of those winds...and the tree branches that got borken off are all blown out into the soccer field at the bottom of the hill in the same direction...

Thunderstorm now going through the forgotten world highway region east of Stratford.
Some cold-looking Cb's seen coming inwards here soon with the front.
