Island Bay reporting 2.4 C, in Wellington.

Sounds a bit cold, doesn't it?

I think we just had a shower of sleet! :o
It sounded like it was raining gentle hail, but it rain with tiny ice grains falling.

Is it sleet? Temp is just under 5C.

snow looking clouds crossing the auckland area...
would not surprise me if there is sleet falling on the top of the Waitaks
I headed up the Waitaks - hit heavy hail in the Henderson Valley, as I climbed altitude there were big patches of hail on the road. Up on Scenic Drive there was heaps of hail with the whole road surface covered in some areas. Very tricky driving. I stopped at a lookout (410m ASL) and waited.

The temperature dropped as low as 4.1 deg C with a wind chill of 0.8 deg C. Had a good view of a couple of CG's drop into the Titirangi / Glen Eden areas and sat out a hail shower. One day I'll get some snow up there!

Agree with potential for sleet - I had some very splattery hail in a couple of places :)

Hi Ricky,

It was an eventful trip.

Heard the thunder here yes, and another sleety shower! A mix of hail and slushy icy rain drops. But temperature is rising now so maybe no more ice rain here. :(

It's dropped quite a bit out in West Auckland, now sitting on 5.4 ... with hail still splattering on the windows and we are thinking of going out tonight! :-k

I'm used to hearing that snow has closed the Desert Road, and sometimes the Napier-Taupo and Rimutaka Hill Roads during winter blasts, but Highway 29 Tauranga-Hamilton over the Kamais? I don't ever recall that road being closed by snow and ice before. This is one unusually severe wintry blast.

More hail and soft ice pellets through here just before, with 61km/h gusts of wind.

I've decided after some investigation that it was graupel that fell, not sleet :)

Still lots of CBs "downstream" from us on the MS radar - could still be some heavy showers tonight yet.

Snowing here in Pinehaven!! And recorded by my Station - first time I have seen the snow icon in Weather Display :) :) :) Very cold, currently 0.5C and snow/frozen rain falling. Have taken some photos of the cars and our deck covered in the white stuff.... quite amazing, I hav enot recorded or photographed a snow event here, even though we are in the hills surrounding Upper Hutt and just below the Rimutaka Range. Even the neighbours are out having a look in the middle of the AB's test!!

Approximately 175m according to the GPS.

Interestingly, now the temperature is starting to increse with a slight southerly coming through.... 1.5C and increasing :( :( :(

Temp now 2.8C and climbing as the southerly is starting to increase.... snow up here in is a rare experience according to my next door neighbour who reckons he's seen it snow 3 time up here in 20 years. We see a bit of sleet, but this was something else. The higher hills around Upper Hutt do get a dusting from time to time, but still, nice to record it on my station....

I see the southerly has hit the Cake Tin... and is now hitting us and rattling the windows! :D Go the AB's!

Think i just heard a very distant rumble. If there is a good shower coming boy it will be interesting. its only a few degrees out there.

EDIT: Yip i sure did. Lightning strike showing up in the hills. Wish the Auckland radar would fix itself so we can see whats coming

Thunder and occasional lightning has started again, also rain and wind are picking up again in Titirangi.
Lightning had damaged scada control equipment at Hepburn Transpower. I was called out to manually close two Vector 33 kV OCB's feeding Henderson substation.
Very cold outside.
Who put the LED's on the lightning arrestor ?

wow... a major squall just ripped through penrose, headed east.
tree bending continuous wind and BB-pea sized hail for 10 minutes with gusts i would guesstimate in excess of 130km/h... never seen such force in a thunderstorm before. lightning too, lots of it! (seems to have stopped now)

Yes I knew something was coming...my anemometer read 0km/h and I thought the calm before the storm...there was a hail shower followed by three close lightning flashes and loud thunder, now some rain with 52km/h wind gusts.

Big hailstorm here - distant lightning/thunder - must have been the stuff you've just seen in Penrose/Howick
