SW wind change here with that squall line.,..now only 7.3 oC with rain....brrrr
Waiuku Netball has been cancelled because of the thunderstorm....
edit now only 6.5oC....I would say snow is likely on Pirongia, etc...

Been some good thunder here over the last half hour with hail falling on the hills. I'd say the thunder has been induced by orographic effects (ie pushing up over the waitaks) hence why the sudden lack of thunder once it gets over.

Very cold looking tops with 500mb temps <-30degC

Heading down to the waikato today so should see some action for sure

Have had some hail here and thunder through the west last hour.
Picture, thundery Cb cloud over West Auckland ( Hail visible falling from cloud )
You can see the snow line in the sky today under the Cb clouds over AK, about as close as it gets to snow here, not very close though, currently 7C.

Yet another hail shower passing though. This is probably the third one since 7:00am. I haven't heard much thunder though, although I believe that there is some up towards Wanganui, at present.

Heavy hail hit the southern part of Palmerston North, in the last 0.5hr. Just had a call from my niece, who told me that it is snowing at Cheltenham and Kiwitea, about 1000ft absl and 30km to the NE of Palmerston North.

I have come for a drive down to the Volcanic Plateau this morning. Observed hail and a few lightning flashes on the drive south through Waikato this morn. Sleet at Taumaranui. Light snow fall at National Park with 1cm on the ground and melting now. The Mt is open so might head up there. Weather here cloudy with light snow/hail showers but some cb's/heavy snow showers around.

Certainly snowing on Mount Te Aroha, doubt if it would be up the Coromandels yet.

Just got down to 5.0C with that last rain shower....it's freezing!
Weather station reported windchills under 0 when the wind was gusting 44km/h (max for the day).

Pity it was sunny in the morning, could have had a day like the 3 days in June 2006 where 10C was not reached.

i was watching a rugby game in temple view this morning. Had a strange hail shower come through. It started as hail but then it turned to flat hail peices the size of your fingernail but really flat. It was quite mushy hail when it turned to that. Enough to make the ground turn white. Cant see any snow on Pirongia and cant even see Te Aroha at all.

3pm temps are very icy in central NI, eg -1C in Waiouru and 3C in Taupo. (with reports of low level snow nearby) BTW, it's exactly 5 years since the very cold southerly of July 2003, which also brought snow to very low levels in the southern and central NI.
