Very interesting, reading all these reports.

We recorded 49mm rain for the 24hrs to 7am this morning. Not affected at all by the wind, but we've had a small flood at home today with accumulated rainwater entering under a downstairs door. Power stayed on this time!

Very interesting to hear about the wind damage/possible Tornado reports from BOP.

Tauranga is bracing for possible evacuations because of slips while Mount Maunganui has been hit by a mini tornado...
And the mini-tornado has damaged homes near Mount Maunganui's Bayfair shopping centre. The tornado has lifted roof tiles and caused other property damage. The area hit includes Ocean Beach Road, Inverell Place and Gloucester Street. Local resident Noeline Sealey says they watched the tornado come past their front window, then went outside when it had passed. ...

Not many people call them Depressions these days,as it means more about a bad economy.Some countries call ordinary lows "Cyclones".
He is a spokesman for the Newstalk ZB network and most people probably dont care if its F1 or F5 apart from it being a scale to compare to or whether how deep or complex a low is apart from how many isobars or how close/big in area it is.He appears to have an interest in weather hence us all being here though some differing views.

michael, theres a reason we dont like calling these storms cyclones - because they are different events. we havent had a real cyclone here, and when/if we do, people might only take the usual precautions they would take for deep depressions like this. the terms are there to differentiate them, and we should be using them in my opinion.

also, F1-F5 are tornado categories, not cyclone, i believe you meant Category 1-5.

hey all,

just got sent home from school after it was closed due to flooding. on my drive home i saw a tree fallen onto a house and a number of other trees fallen onto the road, and alot of surface flooding. arrived home to no power and alot of trees fallen down.

well..

On March 4 Bola transitioned into an extratropical storm, passing to the north of the North Island of New Zealand on March 8.

..so technically not.. Funa falls into this category as well. we may well have had actual cyclones hit us in the past, however it would have been pretty long ago, and only the wisest of those among us would remember them . but Bola was a really good storm anyway, and the closest ive personally ever had to experiencing a tropical cyclone.

Ive been watching the river levels in the waikato with great intrest today. Looks like there is going to be some major flooding of some rivers.

I was talking to dad today and he has a main board drain run through the centre of his farm and he said it was already full at 9:30 and still raining heavily. Soooo i would think it has the potential to get close to the height it did in Feb 03 (i think it was 03.. you all know the Feb im talking about any way) where it backed up all the drains on the farm to the point where the garden and lawn were flooded nearly up to the door step along with numerous padoks. Ill get mum to go out and take some photos just before dark but i think it will peak in the middle of the night, unlike the Feb one where it peaked mid morning.
