Re: Another deep (Tasman) LOW: Jul 29-Aug 1st
While it may not be 100% correct to call these lows Cyclones, they are not far off it.
The one last weekend had a central pressure of around 960 and the lastest 970.
With the wind speeds as well, they would be Category 1 or 2 Cyclones here in the tropics.
These recent storms are very unusual because they are not true cyclones and are outside cyclone season.
But they still form in the warm sub-tropical/tropical waters off Queensland, so carry warm moist air with them.
(We have had the frontal feed from both storms pass over us here in Vanuatu)
Most of Cyclones up here fizzle out before they get to NZ, but every few years you get the exceptions.
Cyclone Giselle (Wahine Storm), Cyclone Bola and Cyclone Fergus being some of those exceptions.
The normal name for these after they leave the tropics is ex-TC **, but to the media they are still cyclones.
So what name do we cause these new type of storms? Depression is too soft, as it is more rain linked.
Cyclone is not correct? And they are not named Cyclones anyway.
Severe storm is a good name as any as it conveys a message as well as a good description.

Re: Another deep (Tasman) LOW: Jul 29-Aug 1st
I would not call the these last 2 storm system "unusual or not normal" myself
just been a while since we have seen them form so far north, and
bomb lows do occur, but more often that not they form NE of NZ and miss NZ
but its a numbers game...eventualy we dont dodge the bullet
so this time we have had 2 form to the NW of us and make a direct hit
just the position of the jet stream at the moment (which has not moved much since the weekend storm)

these lows arent any different to any regular low, except they are deeper. thats pretty much it, they form the same way as well. as has been noted on this forum recently, true cyclones are warm-cored and a totally different beast, keeping their intense structure intact by drawing energy from the warm tropical oceans. once cyclones pass into cooler waters, they begin extra-tropical transition into storms similar to these. worth checking out on wikipedia, good read.

Yes ,looked at that.May be we need a new name or catagory, like baroclinic which was catagorised under,or the same as extratropical but different Not sure really.Vertigo wrote:these lows arent any different to any regular low, except they are deeper. thats pretty much it, they form the same way as well. as has been noted on this forum recently, true cyclones are warm-cored and a totally different beast, keeping their intense structure intact by drawing energy from the warm tropical oceans. once cyclones pass into cooler waters, they begin extra-tropical transition into storms similar to these. worth checking out on wikipedia, good read.

Can get wet weather systems any time of the year moving down from up there, perhaps autumn is the most common time for this. These recent storms are very unusual because they are not true cyclones and are outside cyclone season.
But they still form in the warm sub-tropical/tropical waters off Queensland, so carry warm moist air with them.
Some heavy showers around Ak this afternoon.

Wow that's a fair bit of surface water. No more showers here since 3pm.spwill wrote:Some heavy showers around Ak this afternoon.
I haven't seen the ground this waterlogged here for some time. I suspect any rain that falls now all runs off. I thought widespread heavy showers and the odd thunderstorm were expected this afternoon and evening?

Re: Another deep (Tasman) LOW: Jul 29-Aug 1st
Just had another chat to dad and he said he hasnt seen it this flooded since Feb 04 (Correct myself on my earlyer post of Feb 03). Still not to that height as my brother is saying that it isnt anywhere near the garden and lawn yet. But it is still rising rapidly. Dads going out to take photos once he has all the calves fed and cows shut away.
Watched the 4:30 news and its rather nasty looking. Picton in a state of emergency.

Re: Another deep (Tasman) LOW: Jul 29-Aug 1st
I see one of the photos of the creek running high alongside Geoges drive in Napier, I grew up pretty much across the road from there... I remeber one time in the 70s it flooded right over the road up the bank and our backyard was under about 30cm of water, most of Npaier South was under water then... that must've been some rainfall event !spwill wrote:Yes, good photo's on the Weatherwatch site.

This photo appeals to my sense of humor! A friend of mine took it this morning in the Kauaeranga Valley near Thames. There is a ford under this wee bit of water that at usual height, is only about 3 inches high!

I was quite impressed by TVNZ's weather news tonight which seemed to occupy the majority of the news.Manukau heads observer wrote:just watched TV1 news

YES Those Greymouth's wind footages were very good. As I said in an earlier posting, a reversal of NW winds for Canterbury, so I wonder if there was a "SE Arch" if observed off shore???
