wind picking up in spurts here ....as the barometer goes up then down again...amazing how it all works in an easterly like this...must be the way the coromandel and kimai ranges are affecting it all maybe...like you get a pressure build up that then gets released
or its simply coinciding with the rain bands moving down from the north

I see Karen wants photos/movies from this weather event for the TVNZ.
If you get good ones, charge them plenty

Rain and easterlies increasing this evening

Eastern Northland is getting hammered again, MS shows 20-25 mm has fallen in the 3 hrs prior to 3am on the Bay of Islands and Whangarei.

heavy rain here last few hours, up to 33mm now
barometer dropping fast and wind is gusty but not too bad yet
low has moved more SE but should loop but south by the looks next

Some huge totals on the Coromandle this morning already. Over 220mm so far

40mm here since 12am and 26mm yesterday. Not as much rain overnight as I was expecting though, max fall was 9mm in 1hour. I see the rain band is going to depart earlier than I thought this morning.
Monthly rain nearly on 250mm now! 8o

Winds got quite strong gusting 61km/h at 3am, but it failed to reach gale.

Yes, the rain should clear out soon. Thats a good total there David. We should get brighter skies today but the air behind the front is unstable so we'll see what comes. I see the Grey Lynn weather station is off line.

Bummer, Castle Rock's weather station or it's rain guage isn't working.

The Pinnacles has had over 220mm

But check this out: Golden Cross has had over 270mm

Queen's Head in the Karangahake Gorge has had over 100mm down in the Gorge.

I've survived ok so far. Time will tell, it's not over yet.

Is the worst over for us in Auckland?

We're trapped here in Coatesville as the Rangitopuni Stream is flooded. Not an unusual event, has happened regularly over the 24 years we have lived here. Ground, of course, totally saturated after the weekend. Not raining here at the moment and a bit brighter so if that continues we should be ok in a few hours.

There was some interesting matamus cloud quickly drifting S ,the rain has stopped now.

nzlizzie, the constant heavy rain should ease from here out, however, the low is still approaching. the winds will probably pick up, and there is a risk of flash floods from thunderstorms behind the fronts developing in the afternoon sun.

The sky is brightening up here in Thames, after a wet and wild night. It seems that every road on the Coromandel is shut, due to flooding and slips. No damage around town.... I think that anything that was going to blow down blew down the other day!

FYI - Golden Cross drains via the Waitekauri River into the Ohinemuri River (aka Karangahake Gorge), which is why SH2 is flooded in the Gorge between Waihi & Paeroa.

Thanks for the info, Vertigo. Steady rain returned about 25 minutes ago, so suspect we'll be here all day. Still at least we've got power, phone and broadband - so far!

Peninsula Estate on the NW tip of Waiheke recorded 67.7mm in the last 24 hrs (same as me), which included a couple of very heavy downpours in the 'wee-smalls'.

MetService's 3-hourly-obs also show some impressive mean-winds for the Waitamata-Harbour / Hauraki-Gulf last night (gusts would have been 30-50% higher) ...

Reports coming in of mini tornadoes around the Bayfair aera to Baypark areas in Tauranga - roofs off, car ports removed, conservatories blown in, trees uprooted etc etc

no wind here in Welcome Bay - unknown by me if a twister or wind shear - police are calling it a twister.

Absolutely no wind here at the mo BUT shitloads of isolated areas around the greater city region with trees, power polls down, roofs lifted, etc etc - looking possibly like more than one twister?

both police and fire extremely busy going to the incidents... 8o

Sounds like it may have been a waterspout that came ashore. I have a friend that lives near there (on the beach), apparently it roared like a freight train and all he saw was a mass of swirling cloud.

Sounds like it cut a trail about 2km long! Power lines down etc etc.

Still I'm only speculating.

Just been another twister down Parton Road area of Papamoa, no major damage reported yet. This one was witnessed.

My informant has just told me of sirens stopping nearby so presumably there is damage.

Sounds like there are a number of these events over a wide area as earlier reported by Gary.
