My hubby is in Kaiapoi doing a job and he said it seems fine. He said maybe to river is abit swollen but no flooding around there. Media also contribution to making it sound bigger. But the photos around saltwater creek tell all.

Be careful everyone. Dont be stupid.

I think it depends were in Kaiapoi you are, there does sound to be abit of flooding around from reports I've read and pics. But yeah the media does add to the hype. The reason for the possible evacuation is to do with the combined hight of the river and high tide.

Jasestrm wrote:Yes i was very concerned when i drove past it at half 12 its bank to bank at the very top and high tide is at 3pm, its going to flood better get home me thinks.
Waimakariri isnt too bad although it is dirty and high that should be ok though.
If the river bursts it will be the first time i have seen it happen in kaiapoi.

Jason.

Time Saver Traffic also says that: SH 1 - between Woodend and Ward (south of Blenheim).
The highway is closed due to severe flooding and swollen rivers.

I heard the Temuka river is now bank to bank, been thinking about going for a walk to have a look, but might wait a bit longer because it looks like more heavy rain is on the way for this area

Hmmm well its the wettest its been all day here now, just when it was threatening to ease right off. I'd almost call this heavy rain now!

Just in time to meet the incoming tide... #-o

Yeah you got that right about the media!! Have you seen the front page of the New Zealand Herald? They say `Death toll may rise' as if 100s have been killed when it's just one poor woman confirmed and possibly her husband. Talk about starved for news!!

I see from the latest wather maps and rain radar the centre is near Christchuch (990hPa here now) , wind now coming from the SW. Will be interesing to see how things develop in the next hour or so with the combination of low pressure, high tide after 3pm, continued rain and Easterly swell.

Full evacuation of Amberley Beach underway

Quoting NZ Herald...
Residents at Amberley Beach, about 50km north of Christchurch, are being evacuated ahead of a high tide which is expected to flood the settlement shortly after 4pm.

Deputy chief fire officer Anthony Parish said fire and police are at the scene and buses have been organised for people who do not have transport.

He said up to 500 people could be effected.

Two welfare centres have been set up for people who require them at Leithfield School and Amberley Domain.

I like this this bit in the report of Amberley beach, "A Civil Defence spokeswoman said parts of the sea were already well under water."  http://www.stuff.co.nz/4637457a11.html

And another one, :-o whats it going to be like when there are no sub-editors left.

"Kaiapoi residents were among the thousands of people across Marlborough, Nelson and West Coast ." :-s

"Tokomaru residents were also asked to conserve water as there was no power to run the generator to pump the water station." :?

didn't bother about taking photo's of the temuka river as it's not up as much as the person that told me made it out to be. It is coming up fast though was down there for about 10mins and had to take a different track to come back as the track i took to get there was covered when i decided to leave

Talk about a **** load of media hype  , ive just been out on a flood chase started at kaiapoi river then headed inland up Tram Rd until Swananoa and swung back towards Rangiora.
Plenty of surface flooding on alot of roads, having to pump the breaks after going through surface water.
Deepest is probly down the road from me on Dale st as you will see in the taste pics below.
I will be putting the other pics up in the photographs section.
Up to 71.3mm here since 5pm yesterday.
Cheers
Jason.

There's a whole heap of water on the fileds between Lincoln and Prebbleton.

Chch has had 60-70mmof rain total so far - 50mm to 9am this morning (going by airport), which isn't bad at all.
