I think Hamilton is in the fireing line for the bulk of this one... Auckland is going to get a sort of arm it has coming off it. Some red dots in there and even seen some purple in there on the radar images tonight. So i would think it is rather torrential rain under them and very strong gusts. Its also moving at an incredible rate.

I agree...Waikato will get this one mostly...but yep, moving around 120km/h!! That's crazy. Raining now in West Auckland...but no lightning...and no thunder now either. :-(

WOW at rain radar animation!

From 10.30pm to 11.30pm you can really see a defined hook echo in the reflectivity in the storm heading towards Manukau Heads right now! Used to seeing them curl the other way... :P

Certainly a good chance of a long tracked-tornado/waterspout in there! Lets see how it fears as it moves over Brian's.. though the latest grab shows the rotation has eased

It does sound like a fizzer.

Can't hear anything here but could see lightning. Thought it was to the SE, but must be to the N, E of Wellsford? Could see stars 10 minutes ago but rain coming through now.

I wouldn't be calling it a fizzer?! Diurnal oceanic heating has just begun! ;)

Also I wondered how long it would take until someone figured out what I did with the word filter :B

PPV though

I'll get a little animation uploaded showing the hook shortly which is really neat and rare.

A storm has passed to the SW of Brian moving SE into South Auckland, have seen distant Lightning from here.

Edit, I see there is isolated Tstorm activity over Kapiti Coast, Taranaki, Gisborne, North Waikato Coast ;-)

Not able to see anything on MS site:

"Sorry - this web site is currently experiencing overloading, please try again later."

Lightning trackers and SAT loops seem to show another cell forming off to the W/WSW...

Here's the rotation that got me excited, would like some thoughts...
Guess the hook is covering a very large area on a mesoscale, would be very interested to see some velocity scans from the doppler radar! ;-)

Wow...wow...wow...nice animation, there Foggy...certainly looks to be wrapping just nicely...and you're right, too bad we can't access dopler for it (that I know of)...bet it would show nice green and red, as it were...bags not to be anywhere near where that thing comes to shore! 8o

Saw some nice cirrus Kelvin-Helmholz cloud, briefly, to the west this afternoon whilst chopping firewood.
The battery was flat on my camera, so no photgraph I'm sorry :-(

Getting the heavy showers this morn but no thunder. Looks like this system has been a bit of a fizzer for us. We've got some much colder upper air coming thru tomorrow so another chance at convection tomorrow.

The radar hook looks interesting, looks to be a defined structure there, maybe a meso vorticity.
Its moving parallel with the NW flow which kind of rules out a supercell structure. Also, there was very little lightning with it, so not that active.

I actually found in the chases i have done, thsat the cells that dropped a tornadoe were actually far less lightning active than others around the area. I asked Roger this and he said yes that is often the case that the best cells for tornadoes are often the strangly quiet ones for lightning.

That radar was very interesting there Foggy. Looking at your post you must have nearly wet you pants in excitement about what you had just seen

I think it would take more than that , remember Foggy had a multi vortex wedge tornado pass 300 feet from him in the USA only a couple of months ago!

the best cells for tornadoes are often the strangly quiet ones for lightning.
Quiet by Roger Hills standards, you still get intense IC lightning with them.
