Re: Winds gusting to hurricane force?
re the lightning rotation thing..
it seems to me that mesocylones in the midwest did not have much lightning activity right under the meso....(but instead there was further away with the anvil), but when the meso's all joined up and straightlined in the evening into a bow echo and lost the rotation, then there was lots of lightning....thoughts?

Re: Winds gusting to hurricane force?
With all due respect Tony, I'm not sure that I'd entirely agree you.TonyT wrote: Weather bomb is not a technical term. I've never come across it in the literature at all (thats not to say its not there, just that I have never seen it). The correct technical term is "bomb low" which has a particular and precise technical meaning (which I'm sure we are all aware of). I have read the original paper which introduced the term "bomb low" and from memory I think the phrase was chosen because of the "explosive" cyclogenesis in such systems. Thats why I changed the title of the recent thread about the latest storm from "weather bomb" to "bomb low".
The term weather bomb originated a few years ago as a misquote of Bob McDavitt (I think, might have been someone else) who did an interview in which he correctly described a rapidly deepening low as a "bomb low". This was initially reported verbatim by the media. However, subsequent media reports started talking about a "weather bomb" and its gone on from there. Its a total media invention.
IMHO "weather bomb" i s as annoyingly inaccurate and unacceptable as "mini tornado" or "gusts to hurricane force", and shouldn't be used by weather professionals.
I may be wrong but as I understand it, the key word here is "bomb", which can have its own specific stand-alone meteorological definition without having to add the suffix 'low', 'depression' or 'cyclone'.
So referring to a "meteorological bomb" would be no different than referring to a "weather bomb"...

Re: Winds gusting to hurricane force?
Hi 03Stormchaser, the updated version has (almost) all ref to the 'm-word' removed. However, there is what appears to be to an almost identical draft version here, which currently still includes a few of the offending words (for now).

Re: Winds gusting to hurricane force?
i dont see whats so wrong with the expression myself
maybe the problem is, is that canterbury does not get thundery showers
(instead you get descrete thunderstorms that develop from nothing)
