Re: WINTERY BLAST STARTING FRIDAY 8TH
Just checked my email from Dad. apparently There were some more light flakes around the Porirua region around 4pm. Nothing settling, but snow none the less.

Re: WINTERY BLAST STARTING FRIDAY 8TH
I can do that on our front porch in sunshine, but out in the wind it's pretty unforgiving. Until recently we have been relatively spoilt over a longish period re problems with excessive rain, in that either a dry period has preceded it or the rain has been concentrated in short bursts. The recent sequence of lows has steadily built up the moisture. A few weeks of drier westerly conditions would improve things a lot. July 2006 had a very high rainfall total but was windier and much sunnier, as well has having a drier lead-in.Myself wrote:It didn't feel particularly cold to me I must say, possibly because the sun makes such a big difference. I can sit comfortably in the sun even if it's only 6C and don't need to wrap up warm.RWood wrote:It was bitingly cold here today, even after a few hours' sun. The sogginess is due to 870mm in the 5 months March-July - not a record, but the highest since the mid-70s for any 5-month period. A lack of drying westerlies has contributed to the wetness underfoot.
I noticed green areas around the city were fairly soggy but still I am impressed with how well Wellington handles heaps of rain, there is a relative lack of deep, boggy mud that plagues the UK.

Re: WINTERY BLAST STARTING FRIDAY 8TH
Just had a light shower in central Chch, but should be clearing soon. Last of the icy blast should be lashing the East Coast tonight - Mahia down to 3C and Gisborne on 4C at 9pm with recent precipitation, so could easily be snow to low levels in the Gisborne/northern Hawkes Bay areas. (which I don't think is a very common event)

Re: WINTERY BLAST STARTING FRIDAY 8TH
My thermometer recorded its lowest since I started using it in 2006, it said the low was -1.2oC! Not particularly frosty though (drier air).
Eastern Beach reporting -0.7oC and Botany Downs -1.2oC

Re: WINTERY BLAST STARTING FRIDAY 8TH
This is a doozy... I normally don't get much of a ground frost up here but this morning she's white as. Still sitting on 0.1c. Nice seeing not a cloud in the sky though
There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

Re: WINTERY BLAST STARTING FRIDAY 8TH
I've got 0.0°C at 7:48am and still had ice on the car at 9am. Interestingly, Waiheke's Onetangi stn has 2.6°C at 8:00am and the Peninsula Estate, Oneroa stn has 3.0°C at 4:45am. I think the former is in bush and the latter is near the coast, whereas, although I'm half way between the two, I'm also about 1km inland.

I see the dewpoints at Wellington and Ak Airport have been down to 0C. Dewpoint temp down to -4 at Chch Airport though thats not unusual for them with their Nor Westers.

Re: WINTERY BLAST STARTING FRIDAY 8TH
Its beautiful day in CHCH today. Not a breathe of wind and not a cloud in the sky. Its only about 10 degrees due to the winter chill higher up but its real feel is around 15 -16 degrees. I had to take a layer of clothing off when i was gardening

Re: WINTERY BLAST STARTING FRIDAY 8TH
Went up to Halfway bush...about 10cm of snow up there and no thaw.
Driving into town this morning Andersons bay inlet was frozen and it was impossible
not to lose traction at some point during the drive in at 10.30am.
Already down to 2.1deg so a good frost again tonight.??
