Yes i see Sunday,Monday could see a rather cold blast sweep up the country with more of that icy stuff to very low levels maybe some bitting gales too.
Still a wee way out yet though, it is nice to have these blasts but i am beggining to want more of those spring mild-warm days under the blossom trees and smell of freshly cut green grass.
Cheers
Jason.

Yes, GFS models showing 2metre temps of around 0 degrees during this time frame. Still a long way away though. One thing i have noticed in Canterbury is we are getting snow to low enough levels, however the precipitation amounts havent been high enough to hang around and be constant, its always been in the form of wintry showers. Hopefully we get something with lots of moisture and cold enough air too!

GFS has changed since that prediction last night... winds shifting more WSW so perhaps snow falls not looking quite so likely now. Certainly with these "bulky" lows they can be very hard to predict.

Yes I have felt all week it was extremely premature to be beating the drums for anything unusual for the eastern South Island.

Phillip Duncan of weatherwatch has wording that got people worried, as people are still reeling from the stormy weather from a few weeks ago)
(his weather news reports get read out on the radionetwork)
http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/
yes at the moment we have a large low pressure system (but there is no high pressure around (e.g to the east or NE) to make the windspeeds too extreme (no big pressure squeeze (but the next low is going to deepen to 973 or so))
yes its going to drag up alot of cold air and bring more snow (but there is traditionaly alot of snow in august on the mountain ranges anway, it is still a winter month), and there could be snow to low levels again
(but I guess with calving and lambing starting about now, it will be bad timing

Looks like a nice extended spell of sunny weather for ChCh as the Mountains will be buffering us from any nasty weather. A chance to dry out for several days now.

Yes, the northwesters are going to help with that. However, i do see some rain spreading from the west after dark tonight in my own opinion.

Jeepers that's a lot of Heavy Snow Warnings the M/S have put out...granted, they are for higher parts of the areas they are out for, but not in the "normal" places you would see them...or, at least, we rarely see them for the places they are out for...

EDIT: YAY for the sheltering of the Alps...beautiful sunny day here in CHCH...13/14 deg in most places around the city 8)

Yes, does look like something heading your way tidd66. The 4pm shows a slight decrease in intensity but looks like other rain bands are forming too, certainly get the impression its going to be very cold down there for you tonight . Strong Northerly here in Christchurch now but its turned very overcast with no more sun and cant see any blue sky either. Some rather threatening looking clouds but thats the impression you get sometimes on these NW days. I think we will get some rain tonight spreading from the west still.
