Your right there. Numbers are excellent for both Monday and Tuesday, good moisture and just cold enough at upper levels. I'm really getting quite excited about this one.Hope the models continue in the right direction over the next 24-36 hours. This could be a really good event for Canty and Christchurch.gllitz wrote:Certainly the numbers, at least, would suggest very low level snow (possibly even sea level) for late MON/TUES for here in CHCH...not sure how widespread it will be, probably similar to what we had last weekend...

That would be cool , but I will try not to be too greedy, we had three snow days the past few weeks, two gold medals the past 24 hours, and the warriors also won!!!!!!

Re: Yet...another cold Weekend
Yes, starting to get a little bit excited myself. Especially now we have heavy snow warning and under the breif forecast it says snow lowering to 100m in southland otago and canterbury. That could so ewasily become sea level with 100m forecast. Our last snow event they were forecasting 200m and it got to sea level for a time so who knows!!! This one has way more precipitation. I hope it does snow significantly, i have uni lectures i dont want to go to and at least i can say i couldnt get there cause of the snow lol! GFS showing more precipitation each time over last 3 or so runs so fingers crossed.

Re: Yet...another cold Weekend
Looking very good still for the next few days ahead, i see MS have a snow warning out for Christchurch well not in particular but up to 30cm above 300m which isn't too bad.
That should bring reasonable amounts lower down, what i don't get is why forecast to 100m you may as well say to near sea level .
I am thinking this blast may be abit better than last weekends at this stage but we shall wait and see, from late this afternoon onwards.
I also like the set up with the trough to the south and another strong cold front following closely behind it, might signal some convective activity when it first comes through later on.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Yet...another cold Weekend
Yeah we had sleet here at 200m but not for long. No definite snow line (maybe near the top of Mt Cargill). I like the look of the forecast though ... So possible 30cm of snow at 300m, with lighter accumulations down to 100m? So being at 200m I'm expecting about 15cm? Ha, if it only worked out that way.Janos wrote:3.9deg and heavy sleety rain falling in Dunedin.

Re: Yet...another cold Weekend
I drove from Queenstown to Dunedin last night, pretty severe blizzard conditions from just south of Alexandra through to the Dunedin side of Manuka gorge. Made for a slow trip (3 hr 45), with a few cms of snow accumulating on the road in places, as well as a couple of very icy spots, and just about zero visibility at times with low cloud also. A few cars abandonned on the side of the road in places. With the full moon though, it looked amazing when the sky was clear and it wasn't snowing.

Re: Yet...another cold Weekend
Hi --- There was blizzard conditions from the Lindis pass thru to Tekapo last night. Maybe 3 to 5 inches of snow up here at Tekapo. Its mostly gone now here. And people travelled from the Lindis pass to here this morning say the snow is all gone from around Simons pass south-wards. Last night an operator had to go to a site down south because of a failure. And he told me that it was snowing hard then but that the snow was all gone when he left this morning. But wow isn't this a bit like the old days? Lots of snow falls all thru winter!! If we could get the odd big snow fall with it then yeah it would be just like the old winters. What I miss some times is watching the snow falling for days on end like when I was a kid. I remember sitting and watching the snow falling non stop outside my window for days and it was great because it meant the school would be shut!!
If any of you have ever done lines work in the snow and ice you will know why we don't always miss the big heaps of snow we used to get but. The passed decade has been a linesmans dream come true down here!!

Re: Yet...another cold Weekend
Latest indications are that Banks Peninsular is going to get hammered over the net 48 hours when the southerly event starts to get a hold ,so batten down the hatches.
Numbers are still looking good at the moment for snow to sea level for CANTERBURY.
Could possibly be preceded with Thunder in some parts. 8o
Midday Monday seems likely to be the start of the event for the Christchurch region and surrounding suburbs.

Re: Yet...another cold Weekend
yes but if u go to 'brief forecast they are saying to 100m tomorrow. Also the heavy snow warning says lesser falls down to 100m. So we are seriously looking at sea level as real possibility. They take the conserative approach
Looks like a band of sleety showers heading our way very close now. They are usually wintry sleety, haily showers when they are all scattered with very little but heaps of dots on radar.

Weatherwatch.co.nz:
Tomorrow the southerly begins its hike north over eastern regions of the South Island with very cold air looking likely to lower the snow level over Dunedin , North Otago and the Canterbury Plains, therefore temperatures will struggle to get to much more than 5 or 6 degrees throughout much of Monday.
