More snow here at the high country!!

Unread post by waterboy »

Hi every one. It has been snowing quiet a lot in this area tonight and today and there is I would say about 1 inch of snow in Tekapo village. The following roads are now closed --- SH8 Fairlie to Twizel - SH80 Lake Pukaki to Mount Cook - SH79 Geraldine to Fairlie. It is still snowing well and begining to settle a bit all over. There was snow in the Haka valley and around Waitaki and Aviemore this morning. The snow is falling fast here at Tekapo B power station and I have just come back from Tekapo A where it is snowing hard to. The ski fields will be loving this!! I think this year has had the first decent lot of snow falls since the early or the mid 1990s.

Also there is heavy snow falling at twizel and Omarama now. That could mean the roads will get closed there.

I don't think this snow will last long unless we get some very cold air arrive because it's fairly warm at the moment. The snow is still falling and if it keeps falling thru to night time and the morning then may be it will be cold enough to build up.

Hi again every one! It is snowing again here at Lake Tekapo. I have driven home from Twizel just now and it snowed all the way. At work we were all talking about how this is easy the the best snow year since the 1990s. May be it is time for me to learn how to ski again!!

Hey if any of you are coming to the high country area you will need chains from Fairlie to Tekapo. I am pretty sure they will close that road soon. I just got off of the phone with a mate in Twizel who said they have no snow but he came thru the Lindis pass just before they shut it and Omarama has quite a bit of snow to. So if you do come here be careful on the road and don't be silly buggers.

Hi Mark I heard there was 6 inches of snow on the canal road last night near Tekapo b head gates. The snow was falling very thick at one point I was out side. The snow also fell off and on for the night but there was only may be 1 inch on the ground this morning. It is quiet warm here which means the snow doesnt last. The snow usually won't settle when its this warm. There was more snow around places like mt Cook and the back of Twizel and the back of Omarama if the reports are accurate.

Ok great, looks like a lot more yet to come too!! Holy just looked at Metservice 7 day forecast maps and it shows another low moving in from the Antarctic Next Friday. Pretty intense looking at this stage too. Blue skies already forecasting snow to 200m for canterbury for that period with wintery rain/ showers

Yes Rest in peace Gottlieb....a rare human being. The high country is losing too many Mountain Men this year.

Ka kite arohanui to the Braun-Elwart clan and hats off to all those involved with the events of yesterday. A true tragedy.

Well no more snow around these parts today. It has been very warm --- the snow has melted away in most places and it is still warm. My thermometer says its about 5 degrees now. What ever some body said about Gottlieb I am glad I did not see it because I have known the man most of mf life and his family well to and I would be ropable if I read some thing bad here!! And I would be mad as hell because the person who said it probably never even knew the man!! There are already some angry people in town because out siders are trying to blame Helen Clark for what happened and it is sick. So RIP Gottie you were a top bloke in my book and still are. Sorry about that forum but I am not happy.

There was nothing said that was bad or derogetory about Gottlieb, but the posting contained also political matter which is not acceptable on this forum.
Maybe it is my fault. I shoud of just removed the offensive matter. [-X

What is offensive about claiming that Georgia is a tragedy? It's barely even political.

Both events are tragic, its a question of size. I understand what the author was getting at but the wording was poor and blunt

What is of interest now is what scale of snowpack we are going to see by the end of spring should the weather pattern continue.

Another delighted group: http://www.electricitycommission.govt.nz/ :D :D

The large and increasing snowpack will make for a restful summer for them.

Hi Janos --- no worrys mate but we are a bit sensitive about Gottlieb's death because a lot of people have been trying to use it for political reasons like bashing Helen Clark. If you were not doing that then I am not worried at all.
Now about the weather!! There is still some snow left on the ground at Tekapo village but it is melting away fast. It is a real surprise all these snow falls because we have not had much for a long time and now it is like the old days again all of a sudden. What you other guys have been getting I don't know. There has not been a lot of snow really if you look at it in perspective its just that there have been a lot of snow falls but each has been quiet small. I would say that on average for the passed decade we have had 1 half decent snow fall per year and possibly 1 or 2 very light snow falls. In the old days we usually got at least 1 big dump of snow every winter and a lot of lighter falls to. This year is a bit like that with the number of snow falls but there has not been a big dumping of snow. What I am saying is that we have had a lot of falls like in the old days but no big dumping but still more snow than we have got since the beginning of the 1990s.
