Re: Lots of lightning
reports in that at 4:30am this morning the waiuku area was hit hard with thunder and lightning right overhead (shook houses !) and heavy rain
damage to phones (phone jacks blackened, anything connected to the phone lines also damaged and blackened), roadside phone junction boxes blown open even!)

Have got some serious window rattling thunder going on here in the Horowhenua at the moment. And from the looks of the skies out there, it looks like it could intensify as the night goes on.

Re: Lots of lightning
Kiwidad, I can see the lightning far off in the distance, to the W-SW of here. It looks like a reasonably lightning active storm, with lightning flashes every 20 - 30 seconds, at one stage.kiwidad wrote:Have got some serious window rattling thunder going on here in the Horowhenua at the moment. And from the looks of the skies out there, it looks like it could intensify as the night goes on.

Re: Lots of lightning
Edsel street towards Millbrook rd, Henderson was white with hail this morning after the brief very active squal at 09.15 - 09.20 . The sky was nearly black prior to the stormsqual.
Murphy's law was that I forgot my camera today to take evidence, although it was mentioned on the 10 O'clock news on 1ZB.

Re: Lots of lightning
Have had some mighty loud thunder and lots of lightning here this evening.
I ventured out to the local aero club moments ago, which has a wonderfull unobstructed vista to the north and west.
Iset up my canon to try and capture some of the lighting, but I was too late!! lol.
The front passed over and a torrential downpour ensued!
Home now slightly dissapointed, but determined to get some good shots from there in the future.
Zap-o-meter snapped before.

Re: Lots of lightning
yes, I tracked those taranaki strikes good from here too
is that 2nd screen shot of your boltec/nexstorm?
do you have that available on a web site at all (and so able to be used for the combined/correlated)?

Re: Lots of lightning
There's a few strikes over inland Otago/Southland which is a bit unusual. Maybe its elevated stuff.

Re: Lots of lightning
No sorry - the images are gleened from another website...
I have been pricing up an LD-250, and have a couple of old PC's in the shed, either which would run it fine.
Sadly, two kids, two cars, and the mortgage doesnt leave much toy money.
Maybe next year.

Re: Lots of lightning
Again, sorry, the images are snapped from the Weather Watch center "Lightning Radar" (detector) page.
Just keen to share, but if its only obnoxious dribblings from a newbie, then perhaps I should sit back, watch and learn for a while?
oooooh - massive clap of thunder right now...

Re: Lots of lightning
I agree. I definitely want to hear about what's going on in Taranaki. You certainly get a lot more thunderstorms than we do, down here in the Manawatu.

Re: Lots of lightning
There are some huge, loud, long deep rumbles coming from the west, but no lighting to be seen yet! Its making the windows rattle a bit and sets off the dogs around the place each time...
I was out on the front porch with the canon, and only saw one flash (between shots!!)
Lots of little triangles and green lines all over the place.
AWSOME 8o
(I really do get a kick out of thunderstorms)

Re: Lots of lightning
That's Stevens correlation (possibly combined but I wouldn't use that!) at http://www.skywatcher.net.nz/weather/SVcorrelated.htmlManukau heads observer wrote:but, so, is there a boltex/nexstorm in taranaki?

Re: Lots of lightning
ah
it was just that it was centered over south taranaki, i was thinking it was a boltec/nexstorm station there
the combined though must through out some of the plots, because it does not include my electric fence strikes over the coromandel/BOP
i.e there must be some sort of check going on that another boltec station also plots in say a range of the same location?
that CB to our WNW is still active

Latest RR (10.45pm) shows a narrow but heavy and quick moving line coming thru west auckland in around 20 mins or so. Should be some heavy rain and i see a few flashes to ze vest
Good to see a new member from the Naki, love the place personally, wonderful landscape and exciting weather.

Re: Lots of lightning
the CB that has been firing nicely over the last 4 hours to our WNW has gone alot quiter....now...just as it about to make landfall...typical...
might resurge again or a new one take its place....big area of rain/embedded cb's following it...
heading for the sack now meself...
