Re: Lots of lightning
Its been a beautiful sunny calm morning here after another 8mm and gusts to 60km/h overnight.
Too bad it isn't going to stay that way.

Yes, apart from the fact that we don't need any more rain, I think we've done pretty well out of this low in terms of sunshine so far and lots more to come by the looks - beats anti-cyclonic gloom any day!

Re: Lots of lightning
Brian, is that hail of 2.5cm diameter or perhaps smaller hail to a depth of 2.5cm in 10 minutes?Manukau heads observer wrote:talking to locals, that 4:30pm CB yesterday afternoon dropped 2.5cm hail 10 minutes south of me!

Re: Lots of lightning
2.5cm diameter is what I have been told (by the mechanic at the Matakawau Garage, he said it was very loud on the roof!)
he said some was even up to 3cm!
(which is about as big as you get around here!)

Re: Lots of lightning
nice photo that Drew
re the hail, they did think about collecting it and then topping up the party ice bags with it (which gives you an indication straight away of the size and chunkiness!)

Re: Lots of lightning
Had a shower come through with tiny hail about 10 mins ago. Blue sky above us now but just heard 2 very distant rumbles. Cant work out if it is the shower that has been through or the next one coming.

Re: Lots of lightning
I agree with you about the sun. Problem here is the March-Aug rainfall is rapidly approaching an all-time record and this city of banks and slips doesn't cope well with that. It would be much better if its mean rainfall were at least 200mm lower. That's not as silly as it sounds - over one 30-year span, 1906-1935, the average was only 1065mm against the longterm 1245.Nev wrote:Yes, apart from the fact that we don't need any more rain, I think we've done pretty well out of this low in terms of sunshine so far and lots more to come by the looks - beats anti-cyclonic gloom any day!

Re: Lots of lightning
nearly every shower today has been laced with hail. Had one with good sized hail and even coated the ground. The last shower had some very strong winds. i dont have a weather station but judging by the gum trees it was stronger than the winds we were getting from the bomb low.

Re: Lots of lightning
Pretty ordinary day here...no hail or thunder, just the odd brief light shower around, and plenty of sunshine. Perhaps I'll hear some thunder this evening or tonight

Re: Lots of lightning
Had some beauts of Cb's pass by Hamilton this afternoon.. mammatus and great thick anvils in the isolated cells.
Still looking unstable from tomorrow evening especially as the coldest part of the long wave trough swings over.

Yeah, probably just a minor consequence of 40,000 amps...Manukau heads observer wrote:...

(I know, not a DIRECT hit, but still...these things happen with lightning...) Nice pic!
