Lots of lightning
Forgive this newbie, but I was excited at the intense clusters of lightning activity to the NW.
Is it going to be a wooly night??

Re: Lots of lightning
Yes, the front out to the west has some lightning activity on it. Its due to come through in the early hours so maybe a flash and a rumble on the way, certainly some heavy showers with hail possible for the west and north of the NI.

Re: Lots of lightning
Yes, a distant lightning show through our west tonight, the thunder audible here as well.
Have just taken a few shots. Edit-A very bright flash with loud thunder/ hail here just now.

Re: Lots of lightning
Defenitly correct.
I woke up around 0130-ish after an big clap of thunder in our area, and a lot of rumbling afterwards. To be honest I couldn't be bothered to get out of bed but there was certainly some activity out there with the occasional bright flash of lightning visible through the curtains.

Re: Lots of lightning
I slept through it apart from one loud rumble about 1.30am
Looks like a repeat performance tonight with another organised line of convection coming through here in the early hours of Friday.

Re: Lots of lightning
Yes I was woken by a close deep rumble of thunder at about 1.15am, however wasn't too excited as the lightning only flashed every 10-20minutes (quite infrequent). So there were 3 bright flashes and loud rumbles here and a couple of more distant ones. As it moved over there was heavy rain and small hail.
Was also woken sometime after that by rain driving into my windows (weather station recorded 44km/h max). Have had almost 10mm since midnight with a low of 6oC.

Re: Lots of lightning
Yes, but if you want the trump lightning shot you have to get out there and give it a try. Nightime storms can be a good opportunity. Just need one of those electrical storms to come across Auckland city.Wow thats dedicication to the weather

Re: Lots of lightning
Well done spwill Yes, the difference between a good photographer and a great photographer often depends on what time they get up in morn (although that's a little extreme ).
I got woken at 2am by what sounded like hail at first (must've been big drops), only distant thunder though. 7mm here since midnight, although Onetangi (4km east) and Oneroa (3km west) show about 10mm each, hmm...

Re: Lots of lightning
Nice squally hail shower just through here with hail stones ~0.5cm
I see a bit of lightning showing up with it on the detector.. didn't hear any thunder maybe it was just highly charged hail hitting the roof!

Re: Lots of lightning
Just came through here, preceded by a good rumble - no hail this time though.
Yes, I'm also impressed with Brian's 'nexstorm' Lightning Detector - showed a strike right on top of us with that last one!

Re: Lots of lightning
apparently the loud thunder strike last night that a lot of people heard actually hit either my workplace or the church next to it, in greenlane. weve lost a lot of lights, and im suprised we didnt lose the computers too (web development shop, so would have been rather disasterous!).
that said, the furniture shop next door still doesnt have power, so sounds like they came off worse than us.
the boss was here when it happened - instantaneous thunder along with an intense flash. sure sounds like a direct strike. power went out in the area for some time afterwards.

Re: Lots of lightning
Yes a hail shower came through here this morning....wind gusts peaked at 53km/h (9:37am). There was also a roll of thunder with the CB, and another distant one about an hour later. Just 1mm since 8am. The showers cleared by 11am.
Looking forward to more action tomorrow
