Cold weather event 17th to 20th August

Looks like there may be a cold weather event,especially for eastern areas, from the 17th to 20th August.

OK so what am I not seeing? Can someone please bring me up to speed, new to the reading of all things weather related, I have noted however that past cold snaps and snow have shown up as lumpy white shower clouds on satelite pictures, however the latest 6pm picture on Met service apart from some pretty inconspicuous bits off to the south east of the South Island there doesnt seem to be anything BIG yet heading our way.

So....the cold blast thats coming, is it going to develop some more out of this patchy stuff to the south east or is it still out of view on the picture in which case surely its going to be later arriving than forecast?

Or is it that the paler cloud due South on the picture is the weather and that its going to be more of a consistent fall than showery activity?

Further to my last post , one of those pretty inconspicuous little shower clouds is currently dropping some good sized hail over Nth Dunedin as I type, temp 4C

`The Shower cloud tops are lower today so dont show up on the sat pic so well. You wont get thunder from this type of shower cloud but they can still give decent snow showers and they tend to stay more coastal.

The visible sat picture maybe of more use as it shows more of the lower flat cloud to the south.

i think we have seen all the precipitation for tonight in southern suburbs of CHCH, looking at the rain radar this appears the case too. The metservice does only say a few showers so spot on. Guess we just wait till tomorrow afternoon or evening.

Yes it is likely to change and very innaccurate, but something to watch and keep an eye on. Not excited yet but if the situation is looking the same mid week ill start to take real interest.

weatherzone shows a similar pattern but your right its a long way out.getting back to this thread we had some heavy rain here about 7pm absolutly bucketed down.

Heres something to read: Notice "port hills" have been added in with BP now and "sea level" features in it! Updated 8.28pm

HEAVY SNOW WARNING
BANKS PENINSULA AND PORT HILLS : In the 33 hours from midnight Sunday through to 9am Tuesday, 15 to 20cm of snow could accumulate down to 300 metres with the bulk of it between 3pm and 9pm on Monday. Lighter accumulations expected down to 100 metres and snow may fall to sea level briefly

Not much out this way just a few very light showers, looks as though the majority of that cold front has gone through now although the showers in this flow tend to develope quickly when they hit land.
Temperatures down to 0C in some inland areas now with showers about there, so possibly snow showers i would think.
Here's to the next 48 hours then .
