Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Sat pic shows Cb clouds with much higher tops today, looks unstable east of the SI and yes this type of cloud can bring local snow showers as Jasestrm said.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Fine, fine...I stand corrected and apologise...I do NOT apologise for my earlier post with my wee "rant," however...
This event, so far, has not impressed me in the slightest (except for the cloud creeping over the Port Hills earlier in the day...THAT was cool...)...I daresay she's all over, rover...the precip is too showery for there to be any decent accumulation, and although it probably *will* get colder...there is not enough "storminess" to it for it to last...
...(could be wrong...)...

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Seems to me like the issue is theres too much west quarter in it...hences the bulk of the action out over BP and the sea

Has been rather unimpressive...very occasional sleet with the odd flake or two tossed in.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Nothing much here out at West Melton.
No precipition until about 2:45pm when I counted about 3 bits of hail fall down and then a few spits of rain.
Everything, if such, seems to be going around us.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Hi guys this is not much of any thing this time. Snow down south around the White Hill and Gore etc etc I have been told. It has been for more than a day and night. But nothing up here all though I am told that it is snowing in the areas around Omarama and is starting to settle. Some light snow blew into Tekapo around 3 pm may be but it didn't amount to any thing very much.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Nah...just looking at latest radar loop in from M/S...this is a fizzer, as far as I can tell ...sure, there will be "isolated pockets," but nothing widespread...oh, well......maybe next time, if there IS a next time this season.
"Nothing to see here, folks...move along, move along....."
EDIT: most recent short range GFS run from NOAA-ARL attached..when you start seeing the scales having a MAXIMUM of 1mm, you know it's over and you'll be lucky to get drizzle out of a system...

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Getting some quite strong gusts from the south now, and boy is that wind alot colder now.
Pretty sure i heard thunder too from a shower just west of here, heading for Rangiora so melja you should be about to get something good.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Just went to little river and caught a good snow shower on the way through there with very strong gusts, definately had to reduce speed. Didnt even catch a shower the whole way back. This is a non event.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
You lot are funny, it allways was going to be a non event for most people in canterbury.
If people would read the whole weather warnings other than just see the words SNOW and SEA LEVEL under the title CHCH then they would have also seen the words BANKS PENINSULA as well.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
just had a light sleet/snow shower go by, yes i agree a non event, i thought as much at the beginning of the day.
looked so coastal over BP that nothing much of excitement was going to hit chch, i wondered if we might of got a thunderstorm around midday as looked convective and unstable with the wind change, but not even that.
doesn't matter folks i think we have had a decent enough run of snowy weather this winter!!
might have the odd sleet shower go past tonight but other then that just very cold winds.
cheers

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
having another look at things im not totally saying this is over yet, M?S 3 hour model maps shows a predicted increase in rain intensity overnight and into the early hours of tuesday and the temperature is now down to exactly 4 degrees....who knows.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
This event has to be the fizzer of the year for chch, I think we had about a few minutes of drizzle, oh well. cant complain about the rest of winter.

Sorry guys just had to register....been a guest for along time and this thread takes 1st place for being somewhat uninspiring. Drop the use of the word fizzer/nothing much of excitement/sucks...
How about turning the thread into something postive and interesting.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
No, wont be a frost cause the strong southerly wont allow for a frost to develop. I reckon there will be some snow flurries overnight in the city, lets see.

we did have a light snow flurry for about 30secs here in Temuka at 3.20pm, not sure if it's over yet but it won't be much or enough if more comes up

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Just got back from a drive to the top of the port hills at the outlook before the hill goes over to lyttelton. Caught a nice snow shower there and another one at the bottom of hackthorne road so flurries are reaching sea level! Just need the precipitation.
Just had a hail shower, showers are becoming more frequent.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Few light sleety flakes here now and very cold on 2.0C the windchill even colder.
Could be some chain showers developing on the latest radar 'maybe'.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Cold weather event 17th to 20th August
Sorry, I beleive that is not the Desert Road. I expect it's one just off it. My bet would be the Tukino Skifield Access Road.
Works Infrastructure are very active on SH1 when it's closed. They constantly use graders to shift the snow off to the side. The road usually closes due to Machinery working to keep the road clear, ice causing safety concerns or visibility issues in a blizzard.
I don't see any sign of action to keep the road clear. Nor do I see sufficent width for the Desert Road.
To be honest I'm quite dissapointed it's implied as being the Desert Road.
