Found the cable. Of course the photos do not do justice
Oh well.

The cloud on the edge of the storm dropped nearly vertically downwards. Photos sort of shows it. That really low bit was not there before it came over but i watched it just drop once it had passed which made me think wall cloud. Was very neat to watch.

I went over to the North Shore to check out the storm, there was a big downpour over there with a little bit of hail. With saturated ground there must be some flooding about. The motorway was crawling.

The thunder has stopped, but the shower is taking a very long time to move over :? Still no rain yet, despite how dark the sky overhead is.

5.48pm edit: 5 minute deluge finally arrived with 1.9mm rain.

picture of guy I go surfing with at times (we did not go into the sea as it was bit too rough), trying to surf a standing wave in the flooded creek. (Hamiltons Gap)...he did on a subsequent try, breifly!

Looked like a big funnel cloud sticking out of the CB just gone over, tried to photograph it but my camera doesn't let me take the picture on the focus setting I want (it does autofocus before it takes the photo, and so the pictures were all blurred)

The airport shows a SW around noon and tending back to the NE this afternoon. Maybe its more SW inland a little more near you. Hows the rain out there? How much you had today? 10.4mm here so far. Not cold though, a very mild 10.2 degrees lol, compared to the 0 -2 degrees thats brought sleet and snow earlier this week.

Will check at 10pm and put rainfall tally on my weather blog.

Yes, up to 12mm now but it wont be drizzly for the next 2 days, the rain is going to become heavy from overnight tonight and be persistent.

Oh, I thought we were going to miss the heavy stuff and just have drizzly light showers with the odd fine break, there is no flooding expected is there?

Certainly looks like a wet week coming up for north canterbury:
Latest metservice warning for christchurch/canterbury plains & high country:

"HEAVY RAIN WARNING
CANTERBURY NORTH OF BANKS PENINSULA, INCLUDING THE KAIKOURA COAST : In the 27 hours from 9pm Sunday to midnight Monday, 120 to 150mm is likely in some areas. Intensities could reach 10-15mm per hour at times. Further heavy falls are likely after midnight Monday with an additional 100 to 120mm possible in the 24 hours up to midnight Tuesday. "

Which is saying about 200mm over the next 2 days and tonight in some places ( unlikely for chch city im guessing)
So i'm guessing flooding is a possibility.

well, GFS is saying around 80mm. However, it all depends on how slow the slow moving system is going to be. Rain will become heavier tonight and more persistent and depends how long it haults for. I reckon its possible we will get 100mm even 120mm over the next 2-3 days. Scary thing is metservice would suggest some areas as high as 220mm in some areas of Canterbury!

North of Christchurch. I never know what to think of when they say that. Does Chch get the rain warning or not?

I think 270mm is probably exaggerating from M/S, but still...
