Warnings now carried to areas north of Ashburton. Is wet out there now, I'm not liking the looks of the impacts of this for Canterbury, could be disasterous for the agricultural sector to head into spring with floods on top of floods

Re: Low/NW flow ... 23th-25th Aug
Steady rain here from late afternoon eased back around 7pm to nothing, but it sure has picked up in the last 30 minutes.
Just had some very brief short but sharp rain coming down in bucket loads, definatly heavier than July 31st .
If it came down like that for an hour straight then id start to worry for sure .
Coming down on a NE angle now unlike the SW this morning, wind is also breezy NE and it feels like the temperature has gone up a notch too.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Low/NW flow ... 23th-25th Aug
The local radio station was this morning talking of the spectacular lightning display overnight.
I only heard one clap of thunder, watched and saw no further flashes or heard any more thunder, thought it was just a freak one off and went back to sleep. That was about 1.30 am.
My noisy neighbours have turned me into a deep sleeper and I sleep through these events now

Yes, some lightning activity across the E Coromandal/BOP overnight. You can see the left over cb still on this mornings sat pic. With an unstable airmass across the upper North Island today we need some convergence to fire things up again! Daytime heating will help although in August thats fairly limited.

Re: Low/NW flow ... 23th-25th Aug
Yes some t/cu about but a very nice day, 17C. There is a weak cb to the north. No sea breeze convergence zone so maybe not much in the way of convective showers. This type of situation would be highly convective in November.

Looks great out there today. Some t/cu looking more developed than others. Looking at the radar loops the entire NI looks active and building on each run. Hope we get another t-storm here this arvo.

Re: Low/NW flow ... 23th-25th Aug
Yeah there is an anvil of a CB spreading over here now, looks like it is moving from the south? Strange
It is just starting to rain. It is a dark CB, it exploded after I got home half an hour ago - getting huge and dark now!
Rumbles of thunder heard now, very audible volume.

Re: Low/NW flow ... 23th-25th Aug
getting louder....lightning seen....neigbour just back from botany reports marble sized hail!
EDIT: a bit of a non-event for Howick, the thunder did its usual trick (gets louder then suddenly ceases before it moves over), and we just have moderate rain here now (doesn't look to last long). Must have reached its peak over Botany.
