Record rainfall in W'gton city (March-August)

Unread post by RWood »

Now 1075mm from 1 March, beating 1065mm in 1863. Quite bizarre given that 5 of the 6 months will also have had better than average sunshine. Too many Tasman-spawned downpours.

That is a big amount! It also appears that Marlborough and Canty have been hit hard too (over smaller timeframes though).

Christchurch has had 265mm over the last 2 months which is also very high (annual average 635mm)

Kaikoura has received over 500mm in a similar timeframe and Blenheim over 400mm for July and August(annual average 690mm)

In the period mentioned above, my digital rain gauge recorded 928mm. This Winter has had 606mm.

There were some large rainfalls in N Canty in May 1923. Hapuku had 750mm, annual total 1869 (avg 1450). But the late 70s were wetter, with 2156 in 1978, 2044 in 1979 and 2128 in 1980. No records from Blenheim before 1927 - its record is 1003 in 1995. Cape Campbell had 1184mm in 1953 (average about 625), with help from very wet months in Jan, June & August. Kaikoura had 396mm in March 1979. It sounds as if some 2-month totals may certainly set new records in various stations in the NE quadrant of the SI.

Many parts of North Canterbury have had well over half of their average annual total in the last 30 days!

I think the last time something comparable happened at a N Canty. site may have been somewhere in March-April 1980 (e.g. Kaikoura 384mm March, 133mm April, average 816mm) - if not, one probably needs to go back to 1923.
