Yes, i can see that cell on the Hauraki Plains from here at Horshamdowns. Has a very black base on it and looks good on the radar aswell.

Suprising how much thunder came through at 9-10 this morning as foggy said. I lost count of rumbles and strikes.

We should see a thunderstorm/hail over the Auckland area early tomorrow afternoon.

Yes, the frontal band due overnight is looking a bit active out in the Tasman atm.

This lightning strike chart shows much of the recent Lightning activity has been over land where as only a month ago the lightning was mostly over the Sea.

Yes, interesting lightning chart. Will be more storms inland tomorrow, particularly if there can be some reasonable warming, not too much cloud.

As we were on the topic of Aussie earlier in this thread I notice the GFS plotting CAPE upto 1600j/kg over inland NSW for Sat/Sun this weekend. First signs of spring convective season over there.

lightning activity has quietened this morning in the troughs, but there looks to be a weak secondary low forming west of auckand. the troughs seem to be fairly quick on their feet, i hope daytime heating doesnt just produce showers :(

A good line of thunderstorms comming in shortly. Have had some good heating already this morning which will help things for sure. MS saying hail up to 20mm and gusts up to 100km may be possible. That would be neat to have.

That line has fired up with some lightning over the hills into the Firth of Thames and further south in the Waikato...
Another nice sharp looking squall line heading our way.... temperature starting to recover now after that very cool shower and brief windshift

Brief downpour (only 1.3mm) with some small hailstones here shortly after 11am, up to then it had been a beautiful sunny day! Plenty of surface heating and moisture today

watched a very brief water spout...there was contact on the water surface , ie a circular area of spray on the water surface, moving very fast
out ahead of the squall line
you can see the cloud lowering...that was changing all the time, and there was brief funnel clouds appearing :)
it occured just after I took this photo!
also a close lightning strike just now too

Does anybody have a size for the hail associated with the thunderstorm currently passing over Auckland city?

Just a moderate 1.5mm rain shower in Howick with a few very distant rumbles and one less-distant rumble heard. Saw slight mamma formations under the anvil as it spread over.

Perhaps some better activity later.

Thanks for the hail reports. I'm a bit young to know how big a threepence is, but my colleague tells me it's about 1cm in diameter. Radar showed some hail around Hobsonville/Birkenhead area, and a few smaller ones scattered elsewhere within that line.
