Should be some good thunderstorms onshore for the West Coast tomorrow as the front comes ashore
It is the Equinox tomorrow and what a way to celebrate

The sat image from last night looked very nice with the huge cb just off the Fiordland coast and all the isolated cb's in australia.

Re: Spring Westerlies
Sadly there looks to be too much high pressure around, so nothing for us. Looks to remain mainly anticyclonic for northern areas for the rest of the month going by some models.

Re: Spring Westerlies
What a beautiful day once again here in CHCH once that morning thick high cloud burned off. You can really feel those sun rays now! Still sitting on 20 degrees. Looks like a long period of Northwesters around Christchurch and the Canterbury Area for possibly the next 5 - 7 days!! The whole area will be very close if not dried out by then! Warm dry conditions and all...i see weather watch site is saying temps could peak towards 30 in some isloated areas with the hot dry wind. I get the feeling now that this is going to be a long dry summer. Who would have said that couple weeks ago lol. Well maybe a long hot dry summer for the east coast but a quite wet one for Westland. They'll be getting the rains over the next week thats for sure.

Re: Spring Westerlies
I would not use the current weather pattern as a guide for saying how the summer will end up being
generaly for NZ (apart from short term affects like NW warm winds), its the temperature of the sea in the tasman that incfluences our temperatures (and prevailing weather patterns)
currently the tasman sea , and around NZ (away from in shore) is a bit cooler than normal....but that can change in the next month...
being neither elnino or la nina at the moment, the summer will be "normal"....what ever that is!

Re: Spring Westerlies
Yes Melja spotted a CG strike come out of that shower cloud coming home about an hour ago, gale NW here at times with spots of rain.
MS have a low risk this evening with the pool moving up the west coast and possibly spilling into Canterbury.
Might be a few chances for thunder this week possibly even though Tues, early Wednesday's low is just above 1000hpa.
Fair way out but next weekend looks very interesting if it pulls off .
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Spring Westerlies
M/S 6 pm radar (and loop prior to it) showing something (t'storm?) moving up the coast...should be here in the next hour or two if it doesn't die out or go out to sea...

Re: Spring Westerlies
yes, looks like a heavy shower made it across the central Otago area intact (top half most likely), and is carrying on heading east, out to sea...must have been a good cell as it crossed over inland areas

Re: Spring Westerlies
There was a brief thunderstorm which crossed into South Canterbury as the tracker showed a few strikes down that way.
Brief shower just clipped us but more over Rangiora way, few flashes observed further back into the shower cell.
Westerly has become a little cooler now, i believe it is called night time .
Cheers

Re: Spring Westerlies
TStorm was out to sea NE of Timaru, I see there has been strikes in the High Country and down on the south coast. There was a brief thunderstorm which crossed into South Canterbury
September has been generally dry and sunny for Auckland and it looks like a Ridge will stay up this way for the rest of the week so quite a good month after all the wet weather of July and August.
