I think this is as cold as it will get and it'll probably start easing off from now.

Re: Spring Westerlies
yeah i agree the front is quick moving. Its probably a good thing due to its intensity. Already delievered 15mm in about 4 and a half hours. Last thing we need is a good rain dump now that everything was looking dry, infact soils have been looking remarkably dry considering with all the NW days . Fine tomorrow. Nice sunny conditions needed to make cricket pitches

Re: Spring Westerlies
Temps remained stable for 30 mins, Don't think it will drop any further. Definitely wasn't expecting this tho
Re: Spring Westerlies
Satellite shows skies clearing south of about Dunedin now. Definitely a frost in store for many areas tonight so protect any vulnerable plants.
Something perhaps worth watching: Seems like a trough is hitting down south, an organised line of cumulus on the satellite imagery, it will be worth tracking for some further snow flurries.

Re: Spring Westerlies
What's ugly about that?
I can't see a stationary anticyclone of about 1040hPa sitting over NZ for 2 weeks?

Re: Spring Westerlies
It would need to be - sunshine MTD is rather abysmal (and of course rainfall tot. high thanks to first 10 days). May be lowest since 1992.Myself wrote:Looks OK for Wellington.Michael wrote:Ugly week for the start of october all I can say, looks the same Tues-Fri.
To be fair however this (sun shortage) was well overdue - since Nov 2006 only a few other months have had a deficit - Jan 2007, July 2007, Dec 2007, July 2008. Many of the remainder have had a substantial surplus.
Re: Spring Westerlies
Have we even made it above 100 hours yet this month? Pretty concerning if not.It would need to be - sunshine MTD is rather abysmal (and of course rainfall tot. high thanks to first 10 days). May be lowest since 1992.

Tomorrow is the last chance for this month to attain some high sunshine hours. Could be 10 up for grabs.

Re: Spring Westerlies
I think we have fared good for September in Auckland, little wind run especially with good sun.Overall I reckon September here is better than October generally.

Yes, one of the most intense dumps here for a while - about 5mm in 2-3 minutes at 1am (total 6.0mm since 9am), 10.4°C at 6:46am and mostly blue skies this morn.Vertigo wrote:had a fairly active squall line move over auckland at around 12:30-1:00, quite heavy for a while there.
EDIT: Oops, meant 7:46am (dammed DST )

Re: Spring Westerlies
Yes saw that, although I think Jim said something about 'hurricane-force' (118 km/h) when referring to the 173km/h gust at Castlepoint, so sort of accurate I guess?Manukau heads observer wrote:ohhhhh Jim Hickey, you said that bad thing!

Will get past there, but a very poor total for a month that averages over 160, may be lowest since 1988 and close to record low (which I think offhand is 1988's 105 - have been out of the country for a couple of weeks and can't recall some of the numbers). But considering that with the possible exception of Dunedin & Invercargill, Wellington has shown the greatest increase by far in the annual average in the last couple of decades or so, maybe it's just our turn for more bad months. I think Oct. will do fine though.
[1951-80 = 2007, 1971-2000 = 2066, 1978-2007 = 2103 (may be 2097)].

Re: Spring Westerlies
Nice sunny day in Chch and BP, after a frost in the city. Alps look beautiful with fresh snow low down, but surprisingly no snow on BP hills - cold snap must've affected the peninsula less than Chch and inland.
