Stand up straight and some of those gusts make you lose a little balance...

Yes, but...
Already today gales have blasted exposed hilly parts of Auckland with gusts in the past hour to 111km/h. (as reported by Weatherwatch at 7:45am)

I don't think so! The only place where that was likely to have occurred was at Manukua Heads - notorious for its channelling effect.

Tuesdays wind profile looks fairly impressive ahead of the front over the west of the NI. Should bring gales to exposed places.

yes, the only place getting gales in the auckland area at the moment is the manukau heads (yes, gusting to 54 knots there, averaging 37 knots (as windy as Wellington!)
(yes, funneling/acceleration over the hill top,and a pressure wind against the waitak ranges, occurs with a WNW wind direction)
gusting to 35 knots here at my place
(other areas are just getting strong winds)

and, yes, it looks like now tuesday will be the strongest winds?

Thanks Brian... Yes, Weatherwatch confirmed this after a similar delayed querry, from someone in Howick ;), was added after I posted the above. Reply...
Yes the winds are certainly in isolated pockets this morning. 110km/h gusts on the Manukau Heads, 50km/h gusts at Auckland Airport, 60 km/h gusts at Whenuapai.

Weather Watch
Sustained winds seem to have been up to around at least 50 km/h in the Waitemata Houbour / Hauraki Gulf today going by 3 hour obs.

Gotta feel sorry for that unlucky young Australian family campervaning in Sth Canterbury on Saturday...
'Another holiday from hell puts wind up family' - Stuff
Sunday, 05 October 2008 - By Lois Watson

...They were travelling about 20km/h when a wind gust tipped the campervan over into a ditch, sending its contents, including the fridge and oven, tumbling. "It was bloody scary," said the mother... "We've been in a cyclone in the Northern Territory and I don't think it was as bad." Neither of her two daughters - aged seven and five - nor her husband were injured but she suffered a head cut when the oven fell on her. "Last time we came to New Zealand it rained 13 of the 15 days. I don't think we'll be in a hurry to come back," she said...

(full story)
Steady light rain here this morn. A warm 15° night - only dropped by 2° from yesterday.

 Visit NZ from Jan to April.

Looks like rain or showers here for much of the week, a High moving in for next weekend. Was starting to get dry here so the rain is welcome.
