A few early strikes going off down south of Christchurch already, although i noticed there was even activity at 11:30pm last night in the far south.
10am radar shows a crop of showers moving up, should be interesting sun is shining here with a very light Westerly breeze.
Cheers

Winds have now changed around to the Southwest and it is 18 degrees at the moment. Rain radar shows heavy showers moving up sitting out to sea about near Ashburton at noon. Looks quite coastal but maybe a chance of thunder? Quick warming this morning and quick cooling sometime soon....havent had a decent thunderstorm in a while.

SW not quite here yet but cant be too far away, clouds rolling in with precipitation visable to the SW.
Yes the crop of showers at midday does look very coastal but having said that showers do seem to be developing as they move along.
I dont know if we will see an actual thunderstorm with this change, maybe more a few claps of thunder here and there as i would imagine it has been doing down south.
Another feature to watch is that second wee front clipping Canterbury later on.
But here's to the second month of spring  .
Edit: ok now skies are looking much more unstable  .

After a sunny mild morning, the gusty southerly change arrived soon after midday near Akaroa, soon followed by a hail shower. Lighter rain now.

I am surprised the southerly hasnt hit here yet as its still westerly but i can see the changeline coming.
Also had some sporadic drops of rain so far.

Nothing really going on closer to town, a few big spots of rain before and now some light rain at times now.
Looking darker to the south.

This is interesting wind has just swung NE southerly was too weak and now looks at the black sky
developing  .
Just been outside again that cloud quickly developed into some impressive mamatus clouds took some photo's of it.
Few strikes on tracker now i see, wonder if thats from the trough coming up.
Cheers

I had a great view of the clouds developing from my window.
Photos don't seem to show what they really look like, oh well.
No thunderstorm witnessed by me today, maybe later, but unlikely.

Yes, got a passing rain shower laced with hail now. This site needs to change their time for day light saving!!! Its 16:45 not 15:45

Wow, someone was on the job quick changing it to the correct time. Thats service for ya ;)

Sure has turned very unstable out there lots of very high looking CU forms and lower scud forms being sucked into what looks like a cell.
Winds are variable now so light i can hardly tell what direction it is.

Just had a heavy shower mixed with hail, followed earlier by very dark skies and some thundery looking clouds.
2mm in 10 minutes.
Wind turned a very light southerly before the shower then westerly after it with the temperature slowly climbing again.
Looks like more on the way, well done to MS for pointing out the possible affect from a trough on thier thunder outlook.
Cheers

Thanks for the pics Jason. Some good glaciated convection down there.

A quick glance of the GFS suggests some interesting weather on the way for next week.

Not too sure about a spring thunderstorm in Canterbury tomorrow. :|
It depends on timing and the easterly up against the westerly.
...but we will see.
