Tgsnoopy, yes, it was pretty windy just before the rain arrived, and the airport must have just been on the eastern edge of that northerly/NNW wind zone by the sounds of it!

Re: Deep Low: 7th Oct
Yesterday's wind knocked out the cover on my weather station's ISS from the moving cables.
Gotta buy a new battery for it, it seems!

Re: Deep Low: 7th Oct
The lightning data suggests a convergence zone out to the east of Otago this afternoon, SW versus NW.
Looks like the weather story for the next week will be 'anticyclonic weather' for most of us. Could this be the start of an early summer?

Would love for it to be so, but it seems awfully suspicious to start so early....NZstorm wrote:

Re: Deep Low: 7th Oct
Yes abit too westerly and very dry today for any thunderstorm development east of the alps, apart from the few CB's that flared up east of Dunedin.
It looks ok for some heavy afternoon showers inland tomorrow and these may lead to a thunderstorm or two there.
Yes but a NW-SW flow continues over the South Island again by Sunday and into early next week with a weaker low crossing the lower half of the island.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Deep Low: 7th Oct
I thought I would highlight it as its unusual for the forecasts not to correlate. Its only a minor discrepancy anyway. I was alerted to it by the forecast on the Naional Radio mentioning thunder at 1pm and I thought that didn't sound correct. I think it was a case of the early morning forecast being reissued in error late morning.

Re: Deep Low: 7th Oct
maybe there is a start off point for them to be mentioned on the convective outlook..i.e the rain intensity/windspeed gust potential, etc, was not enough to reach the minimum criteria?

Re: Deep Low: 7th Oct
caught up more about the shed that blew down and broke the builders leg when it collapsed on him...
it was a 4 bay shed (i.e open one side)....and it was that side which was open to the NNW wind....they had just about completed the shed...and the builder had just said to the other builder that in 4 years of building that shed design he has not had one blow down.....and then the poles snapped and it all collapsed on top of them when a big gust hit!
(it was build on top of a hill, but not a particularly large hill!)
