Gidday David,

Have braved the storm (got saturated) and have resurrected one of the 1-wire anemometers and it is now back online (it gives far superior updates for wind speed and gust when compared to the Lacrosse) Unfortunately I cannot compare readings now, but at least the 1-wire windspeed and direction is back on line. Have still lost contact with the lightning, FARS temp, humidity and soil sensors .... but they can wait till the rain stops!

Wind is actually dropping away now, and has been replaced with steady rain and calmer conditions. I wonder if the main front has passed now? Certainly was a exciting morning.... :D :D :D Interstingly, the windiest period this morning with the big gusts, recorded very little rain...

I'd love to know what the Road WX Station at the Rimutaka summit is recording... does anyone have access to this stations wind data?

Update 1319: Wind is a lazy 11kmh here now and the rain has backed off to light showers. Looks lke this event is over in these parts.

Wind has now swung around from southerly to Easterly and quite fresh  clouds starting to swirl abit and also get abit darker.
3pm radar for inland south Canterbury suggests increased shower activity within the last hour.
I was looking at the clouds before going westerly on top and SE on the bottom very nice, now it has a NE to contend with.
Cheers
Jason.

I have recorded 59 knot gust max here, 44 knot max average
we (jam-e-h, Ricky, David and I) were up at the manuaku heads when it recorded 75 knots :)
amazing crashing sounds in the trees!

a barn/shed being built on a road down from us collapsed on the builders and broke one their legs :(
and a fertiliser barn has its roof lifted off across the road from our place!

Heavy rain on the 5pm radar in south Canterbury slowly moving up, wind still a cool NE here with overcast skies now and some rugged mamatus type clouds.
Cheers
Jason.

Perhaps not so 'sensational' for us to report on the gusts at the Manukau Heads! Those poor builders! I estimated gusts to 150km/h and I see it reached 139 (according to the Obs there and your reading of 75kts), so pretty close!

The upper trough now moving through Canterbury only has cool dank surface air to feed on for instability. Not good for thunderstorms. Thats the problem with the S change coming through earlier in the day.

At a glance it looks good for thunder at Invercargill tomorrow.

Yes what a wild experience it was
I took my portable wind meter up the Heads and while I was nearly being knocked off my feet it recorded gusts reaching 117km/h. Back home in Howick the max gust was only 49km/h.

Yes, sadly. :(
Also the clouding possibly hindering any ground heating.
Raining now with 8/8 Ns cloud cover with a SW breeze.
Not very interesting. Barometer on the rise ..but still a long way to go into the 'uninteresting weather' category :D
I wonder what the following frontal systems may bring?

Rain now in Chch with a freshening wind - earlier looked like a dry southerly on BP and Chch until this moisture band arrived.
BTW, it was probably snowing in Queenstown this morning - haven't heard any actual reports, but temp & precip obs certainly suggested it.

Raining here too funny that o_O always much needed rain too.
I think the killer today was the fact we had little ground heating when the NE wind came in this afternoon.
Tomorrow night the storms may chug along up the coast but i think Southland and Otago are in for a good shot.
Cheers
Jason.

Well that was a darn good day... very much enjoyed the winds (beats afternoon classes and essay writing any day).

I must say though my face feels like it has been attaked by some mad man on a rampage with a water blaster!!!!

On the drive home we drove pastt numerous branches on the road and a couple of trees on the road just outside of Waiuku.

great day and good to meet you guys! :D yep that 110km/h rain sure was hard on the eyes while trying to read David's anemometer! very heavy rain in that squall line that came through alright too..
The wind here is only just now turning SouthWesterly and with some good gusts... the front has been quite lumpy and drawn out

Roughest flight I've ever been on today.

Air NZ flight NZ102, Scheduled to leave Sydney at 9.30am and arrive in Auckland at 3pm. The inbound aircraft was late arriving in Sydney coutesy of strong head winds and turbulance.

We got away about AU 9.50am. As soon as the initial climb had been completed the pilot told us that Auckland was marginal and there was a high likelyhood we would have to be diverted to Christchurch.

The cross wind on the runway was that high, that if it rained we would be unable to land there.

When we touched down (quite hard from the South, with a wicked motion to the right before front gear touched) the windows were dry, and the rain started before we completed the landing and started the taxi to the terminal. I think the time was about 2.40pm.

I saw departing aircraft but not any arrivals after that.

The drive home to Tauranga was in some of the heaviest rain I've ever driven in.

Sadly I expect further wind related damage at one of the radio sites... Tomorrow will tell the story.

Thunderstorm down here in Southland , distant rumbles to west of Thornbury at 0615 this morning

Very strong and gusty here from 6am and the Westerly sure is abit on the cooler side, some of the gusts reaching gale force and shuddering the house.
Also had a spillover shower earlier from a CB passing to the west, could have been abit of lightning in that possibly.
Still looks reasonable for this evening/night hopefully the CB's stay active and move up the east coast, could be a first possible chase for the season :p .
Cheers
Jason.

I just can't see t'storms with a DP of only 2.5 deg outside!! The air is TOO dry..the nw'er is killing off any chance of convection...will have to wait for next time...(having typed that, I DID bring my camera in to work today, just in case........)
