NZstorm wrote:looks like a couple of weak thunderstorms did eventuate over inland Canterbury this arvo. If it was December there would have been more of them. Have to remember we are still in October.
There was a nice convergence little line that went up over chc. Although for some reason today never really stuck me as a potential storm day. Well not a storm day that I would be prepared to do any chasing, things looked very messy and thats what happened. As you say had this been Dec things could well have been differnt. Had a few hail showers, nothing huge but still nice to hear on the roof. From 11:30 till now.

Darn, it just got the better of me. I looked first thing this morning and thought I might manage to get some sheets dry. I was right, they were pretty dry as I made it to the clothes line after noticing it had started drizzling.

Trouble was they were soaked by the time I got them off the line. :(

Aren't clothes driers great. ;) :)

What a transition from this mornings nice blue sky. Now a yukky dull cloudy day with drizzle and showers. A noticable temperature drop too, down to about 12°C out there now.

Hamiltons conditions are rather cool and got about 16km hour winds not good enough to make anything happen at the moment.
Update: At about this time yesterday a big Incus erupted, now i have got some fibrous topped Cb's at 1.40pm
Look at these new photographs, It looks like the clouds dropping and making a low cloud base. taken at 2.00pm in Matangi
and it over my head Just got a burst of thunder!!!!!! Thunderstorms are in the waikato now.
This is what i heard from the thunderstorm over in matangi: http://web.me.com/gunnimacman/Tims_Webs ... ek%21.html
No lightning that i could see just thunder. Wait for the clip to buffer b4 playing.

Was very unstable looking. Good to hear there was some hail this morning in chch, was lightly snowing in hanmer aswel with nice blanket on mountains surrounding the hot spring pools.

btw Some nice looking CB pics up by looks of things thats been happening over the weekend up north still waiting for our big storm of the season yet. 8)

i think *whip sound* is a fair comment there

Its nice and sunny here in Hamilton, except the wind can get a bit cold when the sun darts behind a passing cloud. But at least the sun is shinning, grass is growing and the birds are chirping. Makes for a great day :D

Yes that was from the upper level high cloud always a great sight to see in Canterbury.
NWer has been strong at times today, not gale force as of yet but it may do in the next few hours.
Looks to be a rather beasty looking low for the weekend, gales in the east with heavy rain and thunderstorms in the west followed by a rather colder SW change overnight Saturday.
Good risk of the storms on the West Coast popping out some tornado's and perhaps a good risk on the east coast too of T storms very juicy indeed  .
Might just need a new thread by tomorrow for this one.
Cheers
Jason.

The weekends low pressure doesn't look great atm. It may be ok for the SI West Coast but looking a bit ho hum for ther North Island although weak instability with Saturday nights front may lead to isolated ts. Still early days though. I notice the GFS has a bit of an upper cold pool out to the east of the NI Sunday, if that ended up further west over us I wouldn't complain.

Not as windy as I thought today may have been.
It was quite hazy here today with the NW but it was more westerly from about 4:30pm and more windier and a bit cooler from then too, with more distinctive cloud shapes.
