Got a CB incus developing at the moment to the NE of Matangi
Update: A cool virga is coming off the cirrus cap.
Look like the Waikato might get a few Thunderstorms as it is very warm here and moist !

I see the 44-ft trimaran Taeping was the first to finish the 119 nautical mile (220 km) '2008 HSBC Premier Coastal Classic' race in Russell at 12.23am this morning in a time of nearly 14.5 hours, which is a long way off the record set in 1996 by Split-Enz of 7 hours 20 minutes.

Of the original 229 entrants, the withdrawal tally was at 137 this morning, including 45 boats that elected not to start due of the predicted front over Northland last night with wind warnings of 30 kts gusting 40 kts and choppy seas. The fleet has mostly seen 20-30 kts since it left Auckland at 10am yesterday morning.

The remainder of the fleet are expected to finish either today or tommorow morn.

I would alert metservice right now that a full blow incus has erupted and id say it could give out a tornado!!!!
This is soo big that it is about id say 50ks wide and i now it is starting to go past the trapuspause!!!!
Update is has gone past the troposphere
By the way the storm is North West around where Piroa/ Coromandel is i think.
Winds are quite strong around here atm.

The latest Whenuapai sounding looks unstable for quite a long way up. ~250hPa using those figures and if you push the surface out to ~18C then you get it even more unstable. Cool.

i think those clouds you circled tornado tim are in the foreground compared to the cb in the background, and so cant be used to judge height....

That rain looks pretty consistant down Canterbury way. I'm plesantly surprised at the amount of sun we are getting today. Just the odd shower.

I wonder how much snow the Desert Road will see overnight? I'm thinking it could get a decent dump, that'll disrupt peoples travel plans.

Gotta feel sorry for those motorists counting on fulling up their tank travelling over Arthurs Pass, the only station there has run out of fuel.

Our wind this evening are far higher than any NE yesterday, yeterday was just a breeze to what this is,today leaves being stripped and burnt non stop pine needles and pollen flying like grenades
Nev wrote:Hmm... I must've missed any thunder near here last night. Got 16.5mm here overnight, mostly between 11pm and 2pm. More light rain atm. NE'ers in Gulf and Waitemata don't appear to have been as strong as forecast - apart from Chanel Island, winds seemed to have peaked late arvo at no more than 45 km/h.

looks like a couple of weak thunderstorms did eventuate over inland Canterbury this arvo. If it was December there would have been more of them. Have to remember we are still in October.

Wow, very impressive looking 7pm radar for CHCH. Good chunk of red in it too!!! Havent seen that much showing on it for a long time! However, it must be said the rain is not very heavy at all even although lots of light blue is over us.

I would suggest that the red tehre isn't because it's that heavy, but because there's a little reflection going on...though the rain here is pretty steady and moderate.
