Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

As we progress through Spring, it looks like more troughy weather approaching.
This We and throughout next week may look promising according to models.

Had drizzle which has turned heavy at times today. We are just getting our first break in the cloud for the day. It warmed things up straight away but i can see some black clouds to the west so it probably wont last long.

Might get something thundery tonight as the 6pm radar showed a nice squall line coming in with those showers, lightning on the tracker too.
Wind is cool onshore coastal NE here at the moment, good to see a clearance after this morning's drizzle.
It is looking very busy from the weekend and into next week.
Cheers

Hmmm...the 8 pm radar shows a nice band of red, but out to sea off of Ashvegas...still, moving what appears to be NNE/NE...BP will get some of the action, we might get a wee flick here in CHCH?? We'll see in the next hour or so...seems to be moving at a pretty good clip.

Yeah!
From here interesting cloud forming to the south and moving slowly NE towards us at and after sunset from 8pm onwards. The NE had died out well not completely but I did notice in the twilight some showers to the SW.
Could be thundery tomorrow but really it's up to the elements. :D

M/S seem to think there is a moderate risk of t'storms for coastal parts of Canty today...kind of a bummer, as I go to AKL this arvo to go see Phantom of the Opera tonight, but back tomorrow...oh well, let me know if there is any good action! (dunno, tho...CAPE is only about 60 or so and LI is only down to about 1 or 2...winds are gonna be westerly, too...nice sunny day, though, so hopefully some good heating will help kick in the sea breeze...we'll see...)

I'm not giving much hope of a thunderstorm today, now even though the conditions are sort of satisfactory for something to happen. It dosen't have that feel also things look rather calm despite the elements. :-w

Well, I noticed low level glaciation on a few clouds to the west and now even building to the south, the cloud looks as it is lacking pregnancy :(
The ENE has suddenly become much more lighter here.

mm looks thundery to me typical low scud under a Southerly coming in, and the NE is rather strong on the coast, port hills and over this way is quite black. :D

Maybe a gifted cigar on Saturday then  ;-) still looks good and the change comes through in the afternoon.
Just a few spots of rain here with some very nice CU forms about, could be another proper shower to come yet by the looks to the SW.
No southerly either yet perhaps just abit too weak to make it up the coast in time otherwise things may have fired.
Still a rather breezy NE wind.
Cheers

NZ's weather looks a bit hopless for thunderstorms untill mid next week when a decent polar outbreak hits the South Island.

The warnings in place were good, Paul, but people like us must remember that it is only a RISK, not absolute potential for such events to happen.
There was no ooooph despite the conditions and it would of helped if the surface atmospheric pressure a was a bit more lower.

Chart for next Wednesday. Okay, its a bit far out but it looks interesting atleast. Spring weather is so changeable the models perhaps have trouble maintaining accuracy. But we'll see on this one. :-)

I think MS have done a good job in predicting tomorrow's possible storms, i would have thought low risk too although that will ammend itself if storms do fire.
I looked at Saturday 5 days ago and thought with the strong wind transition from NW-SW there looked to be some possible rotation ie Tornado's.
Will the NW be a killer or not tomorrow lets just wait and see.
Cheers

Hamilton at the moment has some altocumulus at the moment which means a low front is coming in.... so i would expect the weather to get some possible storms coming in. I will let you know what is happening here.
