Few spits of hail about 1 hours ago. Now raining lightly in central Chch, and down to a wintry 4.2C at Jeff's.

Interesting to see that wind damage in Chch, I see a Thunderstorm moved over the Banks Peninsula area. There was also one or two strikes down Otago and Southland way.
Queenstown was 0C at 1pm, would be very cold in June.

There's snow on the tops of the first row of hills, snow must have been falling quite low, maybe 100m in flurries considering there were big sleet drops here.

Dry here today, with a breezy westerly wind. A light shower around 8.45am wasnt enough to wet the ground, and nothing but fluffy CU floating past since. Plenty of sunshine this afternoon brought the temp up to 13.5, but the dewpoint stayed around -1. Temp down to 8 now. Quite a nice day really. :)

Just posted a photo of Sugarloaf taken at 6:45pm from my house in the photographs section. Temperature dropped to 4.0C during that shower. The white covering has melted quickly.

Very little thunder in the South Island today. The Invercargill sounding shows a very low tropopause at 5000m which is a bit low for thunderstorms. Very low trops are typical of polar airmasses.

Got a CB at 7.30pm and half is illuminated by the low sunlight.
Frezzing cold wind, that was blowing now it has eased as of 8.00pm.
I saw on the lightning radar that hamilton got some strikes but yet i didn't hear anything and i am very surprised that anything would happen as is is freezing cold and wind is blowing that would cap any updrafts that happen.
Update: Im with Foggy, there are tones of fireworks being let off.

Cool, showery and windy here today with gusts to 55 km/h. Lots of fire crackers out tonight however.

Rather heavy but brief shower here just put a dampener on things. Heaps of fireworks going off 10mins ago, some quite close/loud (free display) Rather nippy out though.

Can't access the metservice site this evening. :(

There still seems to be a few showers offshore flicking out some lightning, too far out to cause any concern to us.
Here are the belated photo's from today, it certainly brewed up quick over BP way when the gusty Westerly kicked in around 1pm.
Some of these photo's might help to get an idea of the cloud height etc with the brief tornado in Parklands, I am not sure what time it struck but i took the landscape photo's around 3:30pm.
Cheers
Jason.

I completely agree, they need to have more web servers to deal with the load and traffic.
What would be really good, take a leaf out of NOAA's book. The maps are brilliant and that site over metservice wins handsdown.
What a shame that it is only for America

More snow to wake up to this morning. Snow line (light) about 200m today so I have a smattering around my property. Motorway open etc so certainly not shutting down the city ;-)
