The minimum of -2.6°C at Christchurch Aero yesterday looks to be a Nov record. I think the previous record since 1953 was -1.7°C set on Nov 9, 2000.Manukau heads observer wrote:did any records get broken in the far south for lowest day time maximum for time of year?

It clearly settled on the Port Hills, as TV One showed on their breakfast news at 8.30am

Looks like the NW fringes of ChCh are getting a very heavy shower right now, maybe more hail out there yet?

Very dark sky with thunderstorm here at the moment (in Greytown). Just had 10 minutes of 5mm hail now covering about 60% of the ground.

Excellent view of the frontal line as it came up the Hutt Valley, day went from sun to heavy (and icy) rain in around 15 minutes. Good thunder still being heard, temp has dropped 5 C in 30 minutes and wind has changed from a NW to a SE.

This really is an amazing cold outbreak for the time of year...and here I was in Auckland thinking the 17oC days at the moment are not up to scratch! Been showery here with 12.5mm on Thursday and 5.6mm between 11pm and 12am last night.

A 180 degrees view from the Sign of Takahe, facing West around 4:30pm. I guess the shower we can see over the western part of the city is the one Razor's talking about ...

Re: Wintry blast 4-6 November
Back up here in CHCH for the weekend before i need to go bacvk down south. Been staying in Timaru and last night we had the most amazing hail shower and it was big stuff too. I drove down to the shops there and on way back the heavens opened and terrential rain turned to hail. As i kept driving the roads were very dangerous as hail had settled on the main road (evenas street) to 2cm or so! The roads not being used looked like it had been snowing for hours! real cool!! Very interesting weather down in South Canterbury. Anyways dry now and sunny and hoping for good drying conditions for cricket tomorrow;)

Frankly, this weather is terrible. No, a thunderstorm does not make up for such unpleasant cold!

Re: Wintry blast 4-7 November
No snow or icy showers out this way this morning infact it remained dry but very cold under that icy wind.
Showers with sleet were still going just after midnight last night here, its interesting how that heavy shower belt sat over Birdlings flat for several hours before moving onshore during sun rise.
I thought things had cleared by late morning but I was surprised when driving in to Christchurch seeing CU towering away again with some nice showers developing and a spill of snail sleety/hail apon arrival in the carparks.
This would certainly be the first time i have heard of it snowing to near sea level in Christchurch during November, even though 2006 did see flakes just south of Christchurch but I honestly don't believe it was as cold as this one was.
Back to our late spring like weather into next week not much on the weather radar for the South Island apart from a belt of rain early next week for the West Coast.
Should be great for Cup and show week
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Wintry blast 4-7 November
Wow what a day i had on the mountain with the best conditions i have ever had No wind, hot sun, 20cm of fresh snow, blue dome skies and boarding in a tshirt and still being hot . I applied sun block 6 times and still managed to get badly burnt. I have a bit of sun stroke aswell. Very sad to hear a woman died up there this afternoon. I didnt even realise until i got home just now and i know exactly where it happened.

A couple of pics taken on Saturday Nov 8th
Looked like a day in mid winter even four days after the snowfalls.
