Unstable shower cloud around Chch now - looks like some of these showers contain hail (only 1 brief rain shower I experienced in Riccarton around 1.45pm); not sure about thunder.

I am currently down in Waimate at the moment on a teaching practice and yesterday we had snow showers with no rain at all. However the snow showers were not frequent enough to set on ground but hills got very good dusting!

Wow, I can honestly say I don't think I've seen such well developmed CB's around ChCh for a very very long time.

Looks to be a cracker of a shower in the northern suburbs right now, I can see lightning and a mass of blackness with high tops

I went back from work (Middleton) through Summit Road and on the way I had a bit of hail/rain around Cashmere. Then on the way down the Hills, big showers of melted snow or hail.
I've got a few pictures, just the time to have a look and I will post them.

Very large t-storm at kaiapoi between 2.30 and 3 lots of very loud thunder and loads of lightning, and a solid coating of hail on the ground.
Must have taken a close hit as we have damage to a lot of our earthing points in the swithing gear and some toasted relays.

Lacertae, nice panorama.
I would love to get a 360 degree panorama camera but they are far to expensive!

did any records get broken in the far south for lowest day time maximum for time of year?
Not in Invercargill which reached 7.2C yesterday 5th Nov.
In Nov 1993 there was a high of only 5.9C and in 1976 a high of only 6.5C.
The snowfall event I thought had been recorded there in 1978 may have been 1976

There's abit of thunderstorm going on around the Timaru area and possibly another just west of christchurch as of the last 20 minutes or so.
Had more spotty showers off and on here this evening and rather cool too.
Cheers

It would've been 1976 - very cold southerly that November brought snow to sea-level in Invercargill, Dunedin and Christchurch (not sure whether it settled in Chch), as well as to low levels in Westland, on Wellington's hills and as far north as the outskirts of Rotorua. This latest wintry blast I don't think has been nearly as cold in the North Island, but I've read it snowed early this morning in Reefton and on hills not far from Hokitika.

A few showers on the way to work this morning around 7:30am and the peninsula covered with low clouds.
What a pity I can't take a day off ... :?

18C here yesterday, down to 11C here this morning. Some humid weather on the way for early next week.

Certainly some interesting weather down South.
