Thunderstorms,Hail possible eastern SI 17-19th Nov!!

Unread post by Storm Struck »

Just thought i would start a new topic on this one since things are already starting to fire up out there.
Quite abit of instability about now with showers some shafty looking, it is abit westerly at the moment but it looks like a nice pool comes up later on with a trough.
2pm radar shows a heavy cell to the west of Christchurch and one near Ashburton somewhere, not sure which one is firing out the lightning at the moment though.
Lets see what the rest of today brings.
Cheers
Jason.

Yea I just saw the weather radar and strikes are popping up all around the SI.
Hopefully the NI particularly in Waikato get some t-storms tomorrow, that is the prediction.

Got back from Oamaru this morning after spending 3 days down there. Maybe I should of stayed on????
Very hot there on Saturday with 33C heat. Oamaruvians fainting in the street eveywhere, not used to that sort of heat. 8-o
Nice CB top to the south of here, building \:D/

Been westerly here for much of the afternoon Gary strong and gusty at times.
Nice cell just north of Oamaru at the moment with even some purple showing up on the 4pm radar there, i would say this is where the majority of the lightning is coming from.
Cheers

Looks like a severe thunderstorm around Ashburton with large hail about 4:00 to 4:30pm - radar indicating 20-30mm hail diameter. Storm moving northeastwards towards Rakaia. Any reports appreciated. Thanks.

Hmmm...looking VERY dark out there...some pretty impressive buildups...we'll see if it lasts...the NW was strong earlier, but seems to be dying off...

Had a thunderstorm with brief heavy hail near Akaroa between 3-3.30pm. Got back to Chch late afternoon - seems like nothing here so far, but that easily could change soon.

I thought so. What a shame :(
The NW here probably ruined it, as I noticed sfericals stopped suddenly as it approached here.
Rapid drop in temperature as it passed over from 17.6C to 15.9C. and a huge baromter rise of a half a hPa
Some slight vortexing noticed in it's leading edge, though, as it passed over.

Vortexing.. i noticed that to John I think i know what your talking about, like a roll cloud?
Was definatly a major storm out there late this arvo no doubt about it, it could of been our first and a beauty at that.
That NW TO Westerly wind sure did stuff it up, you could see it getting pushed coastal but to much!
oh well next time. Had brief speradical shower and that was it here, how big was the hail Gary? any photos up? :D

Sorry a bit late with the post, only I had some friends around at the time of the thunder.Quite a few good rumbles and lightening here at Rolleston from around 17:15 but nothing very out of the ordinary :( then it seemed to clear up.Next minute at approx 17:43 there was an hell of a racket on the roof.Hail that was fairly large \:D/ .Lasted about 3 mins and then cleared to blue skys.
